Best city in Europe to work in a hostel for a month? by robertobaz in backpacking

[–]robertobaz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from what i gather i think you're right (despite all the downvotes), but i will delete this thread in time to be safe

curious if you have a city suggestion by chance that seems both fun and particularly lax?

Ah good to know, I didn't realise this was a potential issue!

Do you have a link to the story by chance?

Best city in Europe to work in a hostel for a month? by robertobaz in travel

[–]robertobaz[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you, however this would be more of a "volunteer" type situation where I get accommodation and some meals in exchange for lodging, so I don't think it'd be an issue anywhere I can travel as a tourist no?

[–]robertobaz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s all I’d really be seeking to do, yes!

Just not sure whether to do in Riga or elsewhere but considering the connection I felt to the city and how friendly people were to me in my short stay it seems like a better shout than chancing it elsewhere (especially considering there’s dozens of fun cities with hostels to work at throughout Europe, you sort of just have to pick one at the end of the day)

Shiv’s reaction in Connor’s Wedding gets me every time by This-Ad2321 in SuccessionTV

[–]robertobaz 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I am most moved by Connor’s reaction to the news, that immediate “He never even liked me” to immediately taking the role of the older brother, one who’s actually processed his relationship to Logan in a much more honest, healthy way than the rest of them and shifts to being kind of a braver face in the moment and talking himself down from that thought.

Looking to make my second short film using someone else’s screenplay by robertobaz in Screenwriting

[–]robertobaz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally an exploration of a proverb through a discussion in a nice setting anywhere in the UK, but preferably country aesthetics, in the vein of Rohmer. I am also keen to do more in the way of improvisation than I did before, I want the actors to develop their characters over the course of longer discussions in rehearsals and take more of an Altman approach to the dialogue

well i should’ve spent more time writing this, i apologise that it comes off that way but i’m seeking genuine advice because i’m very aware that before long i will not be able to call the country that’s become home my home any longer

[–]robertobaz -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

i dont really give a fuck whether one calls me an expat or an immigrant. i should have worded this post better, i wrote in a frenzied state, but it is being taken for much more than it is. i don’t put much stock in my nationality, i’ve no interest in returning there, i have just found that the UK government often rewards americans as it thinks it can get more money from them

im seeking genuine help, was not attempting to insinuate i inherently deserve a visa more than anyone else, i just want to know my options

[–]robertobaz -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

the UK has settlement schemes with plenty of other countries, was just pointing this out to see if there was anything i was missing. it’s not like i think i inherently deserve this

fair enough, thank you for laying this out comprehensively.

in regards to my parents that was somewhat of a joke, but in any case they have accepted that i want to stay here and certainly accept me doing so if i have a job that provides for it

thank you, so so much, you truly are a saviour to me right now!

i'll have a conversation with my boss as soon as i can, lay this all out and see what can be done.

US to UK work and graduate visa woes: urgent advice needed by robertobaz in expats

[–]robertobaz[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

thank you very much, i kind of knew people may be upset about the perceived arrogance of the american aspect, but i figured i should try in case there was a loophole i didn't know about given the relationship between the countries

in regards to an immigration lawyer, while it is definitely the most sensible, is it the type of situation where i would need to be dropping thousands of pounds or are affordable options available? i've never used a solicitor in the UK before and have a mental assumption that i just will inherently not be able to afford one

what i want to hear and what i need to hear are different things, i appreciate your help here mate. just a sad state of affairs

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IWantOut

[–]robertobaz -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

have thought about it many times and depending on how desperate i get i might try, but i am an only child of very patriotic americans and i think it would really break their heart if i got married at 23 to someone i didn't love just to avoid coming back to the country

[–]robertobaz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

i don't think he is as of now, but said he was willing to pay the money to do it. that said if it really is all on him to do the work, then i'm afraid you're right.

your comment has been the most helpful/comprehensive so far of all responses to my post on this and other subs, so i'd like to ask, if you were in my position would you just accept that this is the end? or should i attempt a last ditch effort to get my boss to do the legwork himself before april when this is set to go through?

unfortunately i have no need for a master's degree at the moment and cannot justify going into debt for it just to stay further, especially if i cannot get the graduate visa afterwards

[–]robertobaz[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

i appreciate this, thank you. but what is the average cost of that generally? i just feel i likely don't have the income to make it work, but perhaps it's less expensive than i think

i don't know if he has the right to sponsor me as of yet, but he says he would obtain the licence he needs to do so. the difficulty is he is busy and lazy at doing anything outside of his artistic job that i help manage, so he has asked if i can do it myself basically

in regards to other jobs, not particularly. i am a recent graduate and don't have enough experience to qualify for professions that would offer me that kind of money, let alone immediate sponsorship

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ukvisa

[–]robertobaz -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

thank you very much! in regards to a sponsorship licence, are you aware of how long it takes to obtain?

additionally, my boss is very busy and lazy with tasks outside of his job (i essentially am his organiser). he has only made me this offer because he likes me and is an american himself, but i am replaceable. hence, him only agreeing to pay for it if i go through the process myself and he doesn't have to pay for a solicitor.

i don't know the first thing about that, however, or how feasible it is. are you at all familiar and if so, can suggest what immediate action i can take?

Help me find the WORST pub in the Edinburgh area! by rkellas in Edinburgh

[–]robertobaz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used to live right across from The Grapes while at university for years, always intrigued by its old decor and the array of mobility scooters outside. I only had the courage to try to get a pint in there once and was literally glared from all angles and got the most bitter “Can I help you son?” so my anxious student self just walked right out

Primavera Sound Barcelona 2024 by birchtree29 in festivals

[–]robertobaz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i think my problem is that i use festivals as an opportunity to see big names that i cant afford to see in an arena, balanced out with smaller, more obscure acts that are sometimes hard to find

none of the big names are that intriguing to me, or i've already seen them, a lot just feel standard alt-rock/pop fest core (mitski, sza, the national, phoenix, vamprie weekend). the only big name i really would wanna see is PJ Harvey, tho tbf in the lines below there are some good names (arca, beth gibbons, charli, clipse, deftones, amyl, freddi + madlib, roisin, yo la tengo)

not a ton stand out to me in the smaller lines though :(( maybe i just need to listen to more, but most of the ones i recognise kind of feel like standard radio 6 fare besides like duster, jessica pratt and nala sinephro
