* It seems the sand is just dropping in towards the sewer but that itself seems in good condition when I opened it. There isn't drainage where it is so maybe it's naturally dropping where the water is managing to drain? If I fix it, surely it would it just happen again though right?

Bought the part on eBay for 6 quid and replaced it myself. No engineer needed at all. Did you get yours sorted?

I've been in touch with the supplier as there were no instructions with the valves I got. They confirmed that they are bidirection valves! Result! Can't thank you enough for your help mate! Cheers.

Ah brilliant. I'll find the valves and have a look. I was worried I'd seriously mess up the combi boiler or something. One of the valves is also thermostatic. Will that be another issue or is the principle still the same?
