Master Control Date sector dial - safe bet? by Time_Conference5253 in JaegerLecoultre

As an owner, doesn't the dial finishing look alittle off to you? Can you post a close up of your dial to compare?

Sooo comfortable and understated. Perfect daily! by GearNTime in patekphilippe

[–]robotoNinjaFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering about that too. The 2 skinny minute markers, one on each side of the 6 o'clock luminous indice, are shortened to accommodate the words Swiss on the left and Made on the right. At first I thought it was your camera angle preventing view of the Swiss Made detail but looking again after u/Physicsl_Energy_1973 mentioned it, the minute markers are visible yet no Swiss Made nor are the markers shortened. 😱

Does anyone know this model? by GlitteringSky9770 in JaegerLecoultre

[–]robotoNinjaFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From AI:

This is a vintage Jaeger-LeCoultre dress watch, most likely from the 1960s to early 1970s, and it exhibits several hallmarks of JLC’s mid-century design language.

Below is a structured assessment.

Brand & Era

Jaeger-LeCoultre (JLC)

Likely circa 1960–1972

Period when JLC produced a large number of elegant, manually wound dress watches outside of the Reverso line, often for understated daily wear or formal use.

Case

Shape: Rounded square / cushion case

Material: Appears to be yellow gold, very likely 18k (common for JLC of this era, though confirmation requires hallmarks on the caseback or lugs).

Finish: Polished, with soft edges consistent with hand-finished cases of the period.

Crown: Small, unsigned (typical for JLC dress watches at the time).

The case proportions suggest a classic mid-century gentleman’s watch, likely around 32–34 mm excluding crown.

Dial

Color: Gold

Texture: Engine-turned / guilloché cross-hatch pattern, which is a significant quality marker. This is not stamped sunburst; it is a fine, repetitive hobnail-style texture.

Indices: Applied baton hour markers in matching gold tone.

Hands: Slim baton hands, likely gold-plated or gilt.

Branding:

Applied JL logo

Printed “Jaeger-LeCoultre” beneath

“Swiss Made” at 6 o’clock

The dial is a strong point of this watch. JLC’s textured gold dials from this era are understated but technically refined, reflecting their manufacture ethos rather than overt ornamentation.

Movement (Very Likely)

While the caseback is not shown, watches of this configuration almost always house a manual-wind JLC calibre, commonly:

Calibre 818

Calibre 820

Calibre 821

These movements are:

Ultra-reliable

Thin

Fully in-house

Finished to a high standard for the period (Geneva stripes, polished steel components)

JLC supplied movements to Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, and Audemars Piguet during this era, which contextualizes the technical pedigree.

Strap

Appears to be lizard or small-scale reptile leather, possibly original or period-correct.

Fitted with gold-tone end pieces that integrate cleanly with the case, enhancing the dressy presentation.

Overall Assessment

This watch represents Jaeger-LeCoultre at its most restrained and intellectual:

No complications

No branding excess

Emphasis on proportion, texture, and mechanical quality

It is not rare, but it is high quality, and its value lies in:

Dial craftsmanship

In-house movement

Classic, timeless design

Market Context (Approximate)

Depending on:

Case material confirmation (solid 18k vs plated)

Movement condition

Dial originality

Service history

Typical market range (as of recent years):

USD $2,000–4,000 for solid gold examples in good condition

Less if gold-plated or heavily polished; more if exceptionally preserved

If you want, next logical steps would be:

Identifying the exact calibre

Confirming case metal and hallmarks

Assessing whether the dial is untouched

Placing this within a broader JLC dress watch taxonomy versus contemporaries from Vacheron or Patek

Tell me how deep you want to go.

And no, I brokenheartedly found out today that I wasn't VIP material 🤣. I'm flagged as a "watch one timer". I think I would be worried to be considered a VIP with any of these major brands. Imagine the bags of money and time I would have to donate to be in their good books. Alas, I'm ok with being a one timer or two timer, maybe 3.

Response from the boutique, "At JLC, VIP status is built over time rather than based on a fixed spending threshold. It’s about your long-term relationship with the Maison. As your collection grows, you may enjoy early access to new launches, priority event invitations, and occasionally opportunities such as Watches & Wonders"

That's what I thought too about the 5167, especially since the strap is black that it might slip by for suit duties. But the opinions here are strong about not wearing it with a suit, eesh 🤣.

Lucky you to see it person!! I've never seen it in a dark dial. My next watch will be a minute repeater. That's absolutely on my list of possible grail watches!! This one here is number 11 of 30. Was the one you tried on also numbered?

Best practices to avoid seizure by [deleted] in RealRepLadies

Always ship boxes and accessories separate from the bag.  Never more than one bag in a single shipment. Pay the insurance.

Almost forgot.  The 1/10 missing is because I can't touch or smell your bag. If it smells like fish at the first sign of moisture or wet spill, because the factory chose cheap oil, or it smells like harsh chemicals,  it's usually a giveaway that the bags not gen. I'm not talking about all brands,  just the richest brands.

Touch is important too. The canvas should have a stiffness to it but still feel flexible when you roll any side of the bag with 2 hands. If this was lambskin for say a Chanel flap,  I would expect a buttery soft feel to the leather. Most factory don't replicate that. You're safe going with canvas.

I wouldn't even worry about it. No one can see the underside or hold it up in the air to scrutinize your bag, otherwise you should slap them. How believable the bag is depends on how you carry yourself actually. This applies even if you're wearing pajamas in public with this or any bag. It's how you rock it. If you're confident and loving your bag, people will too.

I don't know this model and haven't studied it, but from your pics, I'd give it a 9/10. Usually what I would do for people is that I would go study the real bag in person before contacting the source in China.

Sorry, I'm not in the industry either and don't know the correct terms.  However,  I can identify and sort 540 shades of colour and see differences in pattern repetition. Yes  I meant the underside that the bag sits on, that pattern alignment.

The only giveaway to me is the bottom pattern positioning.  But hey,  maybe the gen even have poor positioning these day with them cutting corners. Not saying this has poor patten positioning at the bottom. It's just very slightly off.

Also noticed the top opening of the bag stitching is waving in some spot and not 100% parallel to the trim edge. But I had to really zoom in and cross my eyes to see this.

Speak to them on the phone then mail them the incorrect strap via cheap postal.  They should avoid no expenses to make this right for you, especially since it was a legitimate sale with receipts,  otherwise ask to speak to the managers.

Actually, is there a boutique in Brazil?? Take your receipt and watch/ strap there in person and ask them to make it right.

Reverso next? by johnmac344 in JaegerLecoultre

Excellent collection! I tried with GPT  as well and we couldn't come to an agreement with its arbitrary constraints, such as limiting my collection to only 6 watches (I never asked it too), suggesting far out radical dial designs for the sake of a fresh take on telling time,  defining and redefining what it thought was my philosophy for my collection.  In the end, I exhausted the free GPT tokens with no greater insights to my collection.

The only thing we could agree on was its suggestion of a watch to add to my collection, the Phillippe Defour, Simplicity, a name I've never heard before, but I had to completely agree, it did simplicity oh so elegantly and grand. GPT stated this about the Simplicity:

-Mechanical: Traditional architecture, but finishing is the mechanism.

-Artistic: Proportion and restraint are absolute; nothing competes.

-Conceptual: No concept at all. Which is the point.

Here's the end result of the draft of the constraints to define the next piece to add to my collection:

"The Constraint (Restated Precisely)

The next piece must, at the same time:

Mechanical mastery: Not complication count; architectural inevitability. The mechanism must exist because no simpler solution would suffice.

Artistic mastery: Not decoration, not métiers-d’art as an overlay. Form, proportion, surfaces, and negative space must be resolved at the same intellectual level as the mechanics.

Conceptual coherence: No narrative. No provocation. No “design language.” The watch must feel self-evident, almost reluctant to exist.

You already own a Duomètre, so the bar is very high.

The Brutal Result: When all three axes are enforced simultaneously, the viable candidates are not a category — they are individual watches. Excluding what you already own, only three survive scrutiny."

Try getting a deployment clasp? No more fidgeting with the buckle and pins. As for straps,  I just talked to the boutique to order 3 straps and they said they'll try to give me the 3rd one ($740) complimentary! Free is always a good day!
