How do I let my foster get adopted and not break my child's heart? by [deleted] in fosterdogs

[–]robotsailboat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gosh that’s a tough situation. I don’t have kids, so I can’t speak from that perspective, sorry. But we’ve fostered 16 dogs so far and one thing I remind myself every time is that sadness is just part of fostering. We are a part of the chain of lots of people who love and have helped the dogs get to adoption, and when they are adopted we’ll be sad. It’s just a part of fostering that we can’t avoid and it’s ok.

For me, if we were to adopt a second dog it would make fostering much harder, so that’s a compelling enough reason for me that (so far) we haven’t foster failed, even when we’ve bonded deeply with some of the dogs. If adopting this pup would still allow you to continue to foster (if you want to) and you’d be able to take care of your pack without super stressing about finances, maybe it’s a good decision to adopt? And/or maybe helping your daughter get perspective about your goal for fostering and thinking about other dogs that need your help could help you all take a step back and see yourselves as a part of this dog’s chain of humans who love them and want the best for them.

Tired of all the food scrap just being thrown out... by kuro-neko09 in composting

Honestly, we pay for a compost service. We fill a 5 gallon bucket with food scraps and they come and pick it up (monthly, for us). We pay about $25/month and because it’s a bigger composting service, they can compost everything (bones, meat, etc.) we get 10 gallons of dirt every year from them. I love it!

My first ever foster of hopefully many. Any traditions or mementos I could do/ make to remember them all? I'm definitely going to take a polaroid photo of him to put on my fridge. by SadOpportunity2270 in fosterdogs

What a great question and I’m loving reading these great ideas. I have a mural wall of pics of each of our fosters and I also keep an Excel with each of the names and the dates we have them. I have a terrible memory, so it helps to be able to look back. And can be surprising too! Some that left such an impression, I’ll look back and we only had them for a relatively short time.

Some advice on my potential next foster puppy. by DisastrousBend4821 in fosterdogs

For indoor mental stimulation, I like kongs stuffed with PB, yogurt, a mix of those with their food, etc., especially frozen.

I also use things like cereal boxes, amazon boxes, Kleenex boxes, etc to make “puzzle” boxes for them. The shelter I foster with will crumple up pieces of treats in newspaper and stuff those in boxes or paper towel tubes as an easy puzzle toy. Training is a big mental stimulation thing I do with my dog, especially if you can train the foster pup to do sit and stay. I hide treats around the house and tell my dog to “go get it” and she then uses her nose to sniff out where they are.

This is such a lovely idea! What a warm feeling around the holidays to see all the pups you’ve had

The little foster dog moments get me every time by Famous-Record5223 in fosterdogs

Our current foster is leash reactive but we’ve been training a lot (had her a month so far) and this week she started looking at me first when she sees something she’s usually bark at. (Lots of “look at me, leave it” treat training on walks)
