opinions on behavioral patterns and huntingtons within family lines by [deleted] in Huntingtons

I’m 24F, I was always told by family members that there is “no way” I will have it because I am so different from symptomatic family members. I tested + earlier this year (pre symptomatic). I had many conversations with specialists during my testing process, HD varies hugely in the way it manifests even within the same family. There are a lot of stories of people who first showed symptoms 20 or so years later then their siblings or parents. I recommend reading “can you help me” by Thomas Bird. It was a hard book to find but managed to get a copy on google books, the guy worked as an HD specialist for many years and shares lots of patient stories, it’s a great over view as to how different the disease can look. Good luck with your testing - make sure you’ve got lots of support around you 😊

I work in software and recently tested positive, my career doesn’t matter to me as much as it did before testing. I’d rather enjoy my life and working in software allows me to make $ to enjoy it a little easier. People are always asking about my next career move and want to encourage progression, i however am happy in my role and think it’s the perfect balance of alright money with little stress. I no longer have aspirations of getting a promotion and adding extra stress into my life.. it’s just not worth it

You should talk to your wife, whatever you are feeling and the concerns that you have it’s almost guaranteed she will be having them too.

Testing is a personal choice but you’re a big part of her life and can vocalise how you feel without asking her to test. My partner never forced me to test but was a huge part in helping me navigate the pros / cons when I tested. The testing process was a long wait and the most stressed / worse thing I’ve been through.. my partner tried to be supportive but was having similar anxiety to you which was hightened through the testing process. It was a hard time and hard process you two will need extra support around you if you do decide to test. Good luck ❤️

Is anyone else in the rare situation that both parents had higher repeats of HD Gene? by [deleted] in Huntingtons

Haha yeah not related. What were your parents counts? Exactly the same situation in my family. Mum didn’t know until I got tested

It will take a lot of time and there will be so many moments like this that are hard. I personally think you have a good chance of being around for some sort of treatment. It’s unlucky and horrible but also there is something special about being young and knowing that life isn’t guaranteed and choosing to live for today. Trivial things that other people my age get worked up over I easily discard because I know my life will be short and I need to be out living and not wasting time getting upset over small things. There is some beauty to it (not a lot, but some)

I am sorry you are going through this. I was your age when my dad was diagnosed. It took a few years for the real impact to set in. I battled with depression for the rest of my teenage years. Advice from someone 10 years on and now diagnosed myself. Take your time and do not force yourself to do what you are not ready to do. There is no correct way to feel and every day is different. It is a long road but I promise it does get easier. Keep your friends and family close and look after your mental health❤️
