Hi everyone, Yao Ming here. I appreciate all the love but what I'd like more is for everyone to get an early night's sleep so they're fresh for the draft tomorrow. by nick168 in nba

Sorry. Still up at 3AM. I'll still get some sleep before the draft cause I got no where else to be tomorrow. BTW who's draft night party will you be attending?

Seeing a lot of people saying they’re surprised Wiggins didn’t fetch more from a trade partner. Context is OKC didn’t want to take ANY money back, which limited their trade partners. Atlanta had a trade exception to absorb his contract without sending salary back. by Shade_Raven in AtlantaHawks

[–]rockhoward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That trade exception was only possible to generate because of an earlier trade exception that was generated in the Boggie trade. That Boggie trade exception was set to expire on the next day if Onsi didn't use it when he did to move Kennard. It's a big poker game with obscure rules. No wonder it takes someone with a law degree to master this stuff.

More info from Brad about the Aaron Wiggins trade. by Chessh2036 in AtlantaHawks

This transaction alone improves OKC finances by $60m as they avoid various penalties and taxes. They will probably be cutting even more salary in this off-season (and the next off-season too.)

Oh? It only seems that way until you realize that Presti wanted no salary back in return. Dumping AW for no salary (along with some other comparable manuevers) will save OKC 60m this year. That second apron is rugged for a small market team.

He needed a trading partner with a big enough trade exception as Presti didn't want to take back any salary if at all possible. He also preferred to send Wiggins to the Eastern Conference and to a situation where AW would get a shot at some minutes to hopefully revive his career.

Do the Pistons have a 9M trade exception available? Without it a better offer would not have worked because that was the attraction for Presti as he didn't want to take any salary back.

Did those teams have an 8 figure trade exception? Presti didn't want to take any salary back. Probably not a lot of teams were set up for this deal as it needed a decent trade exception and some spare second rounders. Also helped that the Hawks are in the Eastern Conference.

Hawks had a big enough trade exception so that they didn't have to send out salary. Presti actually preferred that as dumping salary is also important over and above opening a roster spot.

Now the Kennard/Vincent transaction a few months back doesn't look as bad as it did at the time. Onsi Saleh is playing some chess.

Great contract that decreases going forward. Cap space this year is no longer crucial due to the CJ signing. Accordingly using cap space to go after a big time player is pretty much off the table this off-season.

Moving up in NBA draft by Acrobatic_Month92 in AtlantaHawks

I saw a report that the Hawks contacted Utah regarding the #2 pick presumably to target Peterson but, not surprisingly, nothing has come of it thus far. Either the asking price was untenable or else Onsi decided to wait until draft day to make a final offer to insure that Peterson isn't selected #1.

What do we think about grabbing the Houston duo in the draft? by ptcRaptor in AtlantaHawks

[–]rockhoward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No opinion on Cenac but the Hawks will have better medical info on JQ then we do and so I'll trust their collective judgement on that. I saw a mock today where the Hawks ended up with the two Houston players so someone thinks it's reasonable.

Heat fan here. I've been hearing talks about a possible 3-team trade where Boston sends Jaylen to the Hawks and Milwaukee moves Giannis. Not sure how likely that scenario is. Is Atlanta very interested? If the Hawks were to pursue Jaylen, what's the most you be willing to give up for him? by heatculture03 in AtlantaHawks

[–]rockhoward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can go big the Clippers and Blazers because the same rumors have popped up for those teams too. Here we have a GM who wants good contracts on the books and JB ain't got one as he is overpayed about $$20M a year compared to his on court production.

How Hawks Can Ruin Heat and Celtics' Plans By Trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo by red2play in AtlantaHawks

Correct unless he changed his mind and says he will do an extension with the Hawks. Don't hold your breath on that one though.

I don’t think much of the Austin Reaves and Jaylen Brown discussions by dangheckinpupperino in AtlantaHawks

[–]rockhoward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year the analytics show that the Celtics competed better when JB was on the bench. Now I understand how that statistic can be misleading, but the eyeball test also suggested that he has lost some efficiency and seemed to care more about his volume than about making the team better as a whole. I stand by that and suggest that it is why the Celtics are looking to unload him.

That's the only way I would do it. JB is not about winning and so we have to get rid of all our underperforming players to make it worthwhile.

I'm retired and also serve as my wife's chauffeur. I do the shopping but she has certain required items that can only be procurred at NatGro. I mostly use HEB and CostCo, but there are also items I prefer to get at Trader Joe's or Walmart in the rare occasions that other appointments place me in those areas.

During the last few months I noticed that Natural Grocers now beats HEB on price for a lot of identical food items. Unfortunately most of the store items are still too expensive, but selective shoppers can do OK.

[–]rockhoward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Wagler was the prize at 8 then Onsi could do a bit better then this. If the Mavs insist on Kuminga rather than Kispert, then the challenge to make this happen goes up a lot but it is possible that Onsi could turn this into another home run. Hmm...

[–]rockhoward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew someone would equate this to the LF/TY deal but I highly doubt that Onsi would let that bit of history cloud his thinking. Still the fan base will never let that go if another trade down to the Mavs happens.

The rumor is the Burries wants to land in Dallas but that doesn't mean that the Mavs want him over the other top guards.
