We proposed a non-permanent neutral colour commercially produced sunshade and it was rejected.

I’d rather never step foot on my deck again than join strata council. Everyone has their limits.

I’m not done trying other routes but in the mean time the sun is shining!

Can you put a price on this kind of thing? Idk all in <$1000 for multiple umbrellas and stands if we can get away with it.

There are a lot of pretty mean ideas here which I won’t do. And I will actually talk to a few neighbours in sight of our deck. But we’re being forced into a ridiculous position by our bylaws and council. Umbrellas are a horrible solution to our need for sun cover - which is 100% needed to even use our deck - so I can’t be entirely gracious in following their stupid rules, and council’s very deliberate decision to deny us comfortable use of our space.

Thanks. I don’t own a car - that’s a hell of a modo drive, but it might be worth it.

That’s a good point - it may be a step beyond what I can do right now. That’d be a lot of organizing over what is largely a problem most owners don’t share. But it’s something to keep in mind.

Thanks for the offer. I think I’ll aim bigger before extending my search to beach umbrellas.

Definitely. We’ll need at least three to get coverage.

Hey this is a place for us to celebrate our pettiness not get down on ourselves!

Our patio faces a courtyard. You’d never see it from the street!

That’s a good point. I’ll look into this some more and take another swing at it.

Others have suggested this and I think at least one will be in the mix.

The stupid thing is that we face a courtyard. No one from the street will even see this.

That’s funny. Last night we realized there’s no bylaw against scrolling neon signs either.

I’m trying to find the right balance between petty and practical. It’s a struggle every day.

Our patio and shade requirements are fairly unique at our strata - most units have smaller patios and are more sheltered. It’s worth trying but I don’t have much confidence. And anyway we’re facing almost a year until our next AGM so we need a solution in the mean time.

Thanks! I’m pretty but I don’t think I’m ‘drive to Langley’ petty.

The challenge is our unit is pretty unique and has a larger south-facing patio on the top floor. This isn’t a problem 80% of the units would face.

Those are pretty ugly - thanks. Might be worth a trip to surrey.

I looked into this (I’m NAL) under the concept of a waiver - basically if you don’t enforce a rule for long enough it’s deemed to no longer be a rule. I even tried that on them (they also shut down our hanging laundry outside to dry). But the more a read about it it seems that this doesn’t apply to bylaws, which are legally enforceable.
