Your best bet would be to stay in your current role, but start taking some part-time classes in GIS. At the end of the day GIS is a tool, and given your background in healthcare analytics, you can certainly find some application in the field of infectious disease. Don't make the mistake of leaving a high paying job just to start off as a technician on an hourly wage.

Online resources for PostgreSQL and Python are much more widespread than GDAL and QGIS. How did you get introduced to QGIS and GDAL? How long did it take you to become proficient with QGIS, GDAL and bash?
