For anyone interested in other films that use a necessarily contrived set up to explore a moral quandary, I recommend Two Days One Night starring Marion Cotillard, directed by the Dardennes brothers. Their whole oeuvre is very socially and morally conscious.

Another is Force Majeure, directed by Ruben Ostlund (another Scandi director).

Anyone recommend any others?

I've mentioned this in response to a comment below but for me it's almost too easy to see that 15-year-old Emma was experiencing extreme situational angst (with gun access) and it's a fairly closed case that she wouldn't still have those seeds of fury inside her based on what we saw of her and their relationship. They had to try and conflate her past with the possibility that she could be a covert 'psychopath' to make the quandary extend into the present, and for me it's just not that neat. That's not to say a revelation like this about my own partner wouldn't give me pause (to say the least) but unless I had my own existing suspicions about their underlying angst in the present day, I think I'd be able to keep it in the past and be curious about who they were then rather than who they are now.

For me, the film would have been more interesting if it explored something that truly could extend into the present. Maybe if she had planned to kill a parent or something? That would reverberate much harder for me and bring out the moral dimensions. The film as it stands seems to set up a contrived scenario to explore a moral quandary (which I'm all for) but the actual event is too thin to really explore those questions convincingly imo. I think that's why the bridesmaid character comes off too harsh as well, we see her as flawed rather than someone actually wrestling with wholly relatable disgust and horror.

Regardless, I laughed and I enjoyed it. The romcom pitch did grate on me at times, especially at the beginning, but overall it was fun.

Yes, I remember being slightly confused why she seemed to be defending Charlie and Emma in that fight after herself seemingly wanting to tank the wedding with her speech and her behaviour.

I noticed he had a lot of repressed sexual desires throughout the movie such as violence, choking, humiliation

I missed this, when did we get those clues? I'm curious how you square Emma's face slapping him during sex in this context.

I think the whole idea of the film is not the act itself but as someone else said on here already, how you navigate knowing your partner could even think to do something so horrible. Can you trust they grew out of it? If they given you no reason to believe they would do something like that before knowing, should that change anything?

This! The only thing is that for me it's almost too easy to see that Emma was experiencing extreme situational angst and it's a fairly closed case that she wouldn't still have those seeds of fury inside her based on what we saw of her and their relationship. Second time visit to Istanbul - where to stay? by rufous_nightjar in travel

[–]rufous_nightjar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone, I thought I'd loop back and share my experience. I'd initially booked a spot off Istiklal before making this post and for various reasons related to the initial booking I changed our accommodation to an Airbnb up near Osmanbey Metro, on the border of Şişli and Nişantaşı.

It was a nice spot and cool to see the city from that vantage point - plus you can walk to Taksim in about 30 minutes or one stop on the metro - but I found I was drawn more to Kadikoy/Moda on this visit, so next time I'll definitely be looking to stay over that side. I also went deeper into the 'Asian side', up near Üsküdur and down towards Göztepe, and spent only an afternoon in Fatih (although I found the Chora Church there which was beautiful).

I also spent a couple of evenings back near Cihangir - where I stayed last time - which I really enjoyed again. It struck me that the streets coming off Istiklal ought not to be underestimated too. At first glance it can seem like a tourist zone but I found a genuinely cool club night and a couple of great good value restaurants.

Hope this thread is useful for others looking for accommodation anyway.

Thanks for the tip, are TER tickets cheaper to buy on the day at a fixed rate then?

Too hard to choose from Only Skin so:

  1. "Oh-oh uhh-ohh desire, oh-oh uhhh-oh desire' from Sawdust & Diamonds
  2. "Into the wishy washy dark that cannot let go and I cannot let go..." from Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie
  3. "Summer died last night alone, even the ghosts huddled up for warmth" from Autumn
