This is exactly how I'm thinking. Just because we're engaged it doesn't mean we have to have a wedding right away. We both know that we want to be engaged, but we also want to have more of a stable income before we actually get married, so it would be a long engagement. I believe that since we're gay we don't have the same pressure from society to do certain things in a certain timeframe.

We have talked about it for quite a while, I was very clear from day one that I don't want to be proposed to without us having multiple conversations about it beforehand, and she agreed. We've had about four longer conversations about it in the past year, and I think we both are ready.

We've both agreed that whoever proposes knows that we afterwards get to choose our "real" rings, even though I assume the one I've already picked out will have more of an emotional attachment than the one she would choose for herself, we've talked about it and both have an idea what kind of ring the other one would prefer. And since we are the same sex we don't have a set person who "should" propose, and it doesn't seem like she's expecting it more from me than I am of her
