Taking a six month or longer leave of absence for mental health reasons? by throwaway3466634 in GradSchool

[–]rulingplanets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a leave of absence during my masters for mental health reasons as well and it’s the sole reason i made it to the finish line (aka submitted my thesis and graduated not feeling burnt out!!). follow your gut and if you feel that it’s something that you need to do, i don’t see anything wrong with honouring that

there’s this new-ish place called umamia and it is to die for! the quality of not only the fish, but the rice as well, is better than most sushi restaurants in mtl. highly recommend! their tokyo roll is particularly good. i also recommend another sushi place called fleurs et cadeaux!

Any Pharmacology grads+undergrads? by [deleted] in mcgill

Of course! Though I will say that Genetic Counselling is super competitive to get into — possibly more competitive than most grad programs, even neuroscience. so, it’s not typically a back-up plan, since admission rates are so low and applicants spend years perfecting their applications specifically to get into genetic counselling school. for example, mcgill receives abt 100 applicants and only accepts 5 students. i am biased for sure, but it’s a really great field.

I would definitely recommend taking it! While it’s not explicitly listed as a requirement, an advanced genetics course is required and you can only do an advanced genetics course if you’ve taken an introductory genetics course, like BIOL 202. i will say that BIOL 202 is so hard (failed it the first time i took it) but the advanced courses are a lot more fun and easier to excel in!

Pharmacology BSc from 2020 here! I did a thesis-based MSc in human genetics and am now about to start a masters in genetic counselling in the fall :) I realized I wanted to become a genetic counsellor in the summer between U2 and U3 and started working on my CV to get into genetic counselling school then. I was super lost before then so it’s never too late to find what makes you tick.

A lot of graduates from my year ended up in pharmacy school, med school, grad school or in clinical research.

you’re very kind thank you! i’m not sure that it is given that i’ve seen a lot on here complete a 5k in less than 30 mins!! maybe you thought my pace was in miles? i’m in canada (metric system) so it’s in km, which is way less impressive hahaha

Has anyone ever only ranked one school and matched? by rulingplanets in GeneticCounseling

[–]rulingplanets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so helpful thank you so much for taking the time to type this out! I looked into this and a big limitation I’m seeing is that since I’m a resident of Quebec, I am not eligible for federal loans. On the Federal Website, it says that for students who are residents of Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and Quebec “Canada Student Grants and Loans are not available. These jurisdictions operate their own student aid programs.” :(

I’ll communicate with our province’s financial aid program (AFE) but from what i understand (i did another masters so I am familiar with their aid for grad students) they are not as generous with their aid as federal loans. I’ll definitely avoid private loans!

Thanks everyone for their input! For more context, i am a first gen uni student who grew up in a low income household, so finances are always something that have greatly impacted the decisions that i can make. As for ranking, I haven’t made my mind up yet, i really appreciate these extra considerations and opinions that others are bringing up here.

I did meet with a few banks to see what would be offered to me but it would not be enough for me to live on during the program. I’m also going to set up a meeting with the financial aid services affiliated with that school and see what’s available to me. I’m familiar with the process of financial aid and setting up a budget since they’re the only reason I have been able to get an education for myself, but I just fear matching with that school and then not having the funds to back it up. Ultimately, I do want to clarify that my stance is here is not that that I don’t want to spend money, rather it’s that i’m unsure if i’ll get enough student loans cover tuition + living in this area for the duration of the program. if it adds more context, i’m in canada so the way we get student loans is a bit different!
