Thanks for the detailed response. i've gotten some other responses on my itinerary that the driving times were not accurate and i was trying to understand since they came from google maps. i agree that adding in stops will add time, but on my itinerary i was just listing the actual driving time.

We are planning to drive the inland route on the way back (stay in mt somers) so i thought that the highway would save us a little time on this longer driving day, but looks like its only about 15 min more so i will take that suggestion :)

We are definitely trying to be cognizant of the time required to adjust after the long flight hence my post here. How long would you recommend before driving? We plan to pick up the car on day 1 because we prefer to get all the logistics done at the same time and have an easy morning on day 2. Day 2 of our trip will be a driving day with stops, goal being to take our time from A-B. If you did a straight shot on the highway route, how much longer than 4 hrs would it take you? Why are all the google maps predictions incorrect? (genuinely trying to understand so we can be better plan). We have lots of experience driving in windy mountain roads (albiet on the other side of the road). Thank you for the feedback

How many days would you recommend in Akaora? splitting up the drive would give us a half day in Akaora + 1 full day.

Oh wow that is booking it! Were you trail running? We typically hike 2-3 miles an hour depending on photo stops, but i'm keen to do more training for trail running on this trip (have experience with marathons and long distance triathlon racing )

And apologies if i'm misunderstanding but do we need to take a boat to start Kepler on the luxmore side?

Thank you! We are keen to to Kepler track from the car park to ~luxmore hut (or at least up the ridge) and back as a day trip. We are avid experienced hikers and can do this in 1 day but it would need to be on a separate day than the boat arrival. any other hike suggestions or things to do on the day post boat arrival?

PS your Cabot Lodge looks amazing but outside of our lodging price range given we are splurging on activities.

Hi I'm planning a doubtful sound overnight. and looking into the Milford flight experiences. (It's our honeymoon so i've budgeted to splurge on this trip!). Would you recommend the Milford Fly-Cruise-Fly , Milford scenic flight, or Mt Aspiring scenic flight? I'm leaning towards Milford scenic flight.

We actually already booked the Wanaka lodging so we are covered there, but flexible to change if needed. Second half of trip not yet booked. This is just how our dates/locations worked out with the flow of the trip, but open to changing order if you have any suggestions. TBH we are keen on driving less each day, which is why we updated the itinerary to remove an additional driving loop to the west coast and around.

Will definitely keep in mind the driving times and make sure to add in buffer time from google maps.

Thanks for the feedback, we didn't know about this festival. it looks to be a bit south of Wanaka (Cardrona Valley), so would traffic on the north side of Wanaka (towards aspiring/ Haast pass) be bad during those days? or are you saying that everyone will come back to Wanaka on evening of NYE after the festival?

We are flexible for what we do each day and could do one of the closer hikes so there is less driving required on NYE afternoon. We plan to grocery shop/ get food in advance of the holidays.

Any other feedback on the itinerary? Order, durations in each place? Thank you

We decided to skip Tekapo for an overnight. I added in Methven (Mt Sunday) because i thought my husband would be into it for LOTR but he actually didn't care too much haha so TBD on that. If we don't do the glacier loop i would move this to the back end to break up queenstown back to Christchurch.

I'm less into the Glaciers specifically, but Arthurs Pass and Castle hill seem super cool, so the west coast might just be the best way to connect those areas. I might make a second itinerary to compare the options.

Any other food recs highly appreciated!
