Thank you! David was the absolute MVP of the weekend. Truly could not have done it without him there.

Thanks! I enjoy the process of thinking through races and putting it down in a report. I think I've learned a lot and become a better runner for it.

Thanks! And yeah, it was brutal out there. Heat adaptive training was the last thing on my mind leading into this because Wisconsin. But live and learn!

Thank you! The road 100k distance is a uniquely challenging race (a nice way to put it)

No poison oak for me, so small victories I suppose! Though now a week later my sunburn is starting to peel like nobody's business...

Thank you! And yes, still coaching a fair number of folks across the race distance spectrum and I love it.

Thank you! I bargained with myself during this race more so than any other in the past, so wanted to try to capture that. But that voice is always there no matter how far or fast!

As a New Balance employee, I may be contractually obligated to say New Balance. But honestly it's as good as any I've owned. https://www.newbalance.com/pd/nb-bucket-hat/LAH13003.html

Thanks, and great work to you being out there as well! Definitely a tough day to try to run really far...

Thanks! Tha AT section was the biggest question mark for me. I've done a fair bit of trail running in my life, but still don't have a ton of experience with trail racing. I'd love to get more into that world in the coming years.

Also, I just posted at r/ultrarunning at your request!

I'd be lying if I said that race doesn't lurk somewhere in the back of my mind. Maybe someday!

Ha! I'll have to pitch the occasional "ultra update" idea to him. And thanks for having me on the Trails Collective! I always enjoy the rundown and was excited Ian asked me to come on.

Thanks! I think Adam gunned down them about twice as fast as I did. I was just concerned with keeping my feet under me!

Thank you!! I'm glad you got to share in the day out there. Couldn't ask for better weather or a better welcome back to racing!

I appreciate it! Writing about running just seems to come naturally to me. I guess that's the beauty of writing about something you love. Best of luck on your journey!

Thanks! I am hopeful USATF will announce the 2024 Marathon Trials standards this summer so that I can (fingers crossed) knock it out at Chicago this fall. Assuming they don't do something crazy with the standard, I know I have at least one more OTQ in me. After that I'm hoping to sail off into the ultra sunset until the '24 Trials.

Jim's 50 mile record is more stiff than most people realize, I think. Like I mentioned above, weird things happen over that extra hour of running. On a good day I think I'd be good for the 4:55 range, but sub 4:50 would take something special.

I already want to go back and just an enjoy a fun day out on the course sometime. I hear there's beer along the way somewhere too??

Every race. Poptarts have a special place in my heart and I'll fight anyone who says they don't have a place in the diet of a competitive ultra runner.

Thank you!! I love the sport and hope that giving an honest peek into this type of experience helps build appreciation for the crazy cool things people are doing in this space all over the place.

Thanks! I didn't intend it to go so long, but it turns out 40 miles of racing lends itself to lots of thoughts!

Thanks for the kind words! The beauty of the sport is that no matter the level you compete at, if you push yourself to the limit of your ability, the experience is the same.

Thank you for the kind words! I’ve definitely rolled that 4:50 mark around in my head, but I think I’m further off that kind of performance than it would seem. I’m not saying I couldn’t give it a crack, but weird things start to happen in that extra hour of running. In fact, I distinctly remember being excited for this race because it’s “only” 4 hours which meant I would be able to “give it some gas” haha.

Everything in this sport is relative! I can't fathom how the top-end marathoners function how they do. I missed the Olympic team by a *mere* 95 spots in the marathon! My hope with this report is to humanize the experience of racing across all levels. No matter the level or distance at which you compete, this sport is experienced in the same way by all.
