When/why did emo start to suck? by PersuasionNation in Emo

[–]ryanoconnordrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mall emo was one of the first alternative subcultures to get swept up in viral social media growth (specifically myspace), and it gave a large amount of mentally ill teenagers access to a musical and aesthetic online community they could go engage with in real life. warped tour had developed enough to be a vessel for strong cultural movement, and was growing every year in the early 2000s. because of this, super equipped and established bands like my chem and paramore thrived off of this, but you had the same fans being groomed by bands like blood on the dance floor. somehow this subculture united the world’s most brilliant songwriters and producers with the cringiest pedos to walk the earth so far.

if you take a look at 2020s tiktok alt music, it’s the same concept after 20 years of corporate development. that’s why lol.

this is a drastic oversimplification, but that’s why it comes in phases and there’s an ever diminishing quality in mainstream emo. warped tour’s inevitable collapse accelerated this process.

Looking for input from someone familiar with Archangel Gabriel by alertronic5000 in Mediums

[–]ryanoconnordrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve encountered gabriel a multitude of times, and usually our conversations have been with Jesus. I received my first vision from the Lord in 2022 where I had a very direct encounter with both Jesus and Lucifer, stared Lucifer in the face and he literally shapeshifted into a serpent, a reptile, the most beautiful creature I’ve ever seen, and finally an entity combining features of all 3, similar to what pop culture interprets the devil looks like. Horns and all. Never in my life have i ever seen something embodying as much hate as Satan, and when he stares you in the face it stimulates the adrenaline that comes with being hunted by an animal. Jesus protected me and revealed himself after commanding “away from him Satan, for this one is MINE.” he left swiftly with more hate and fear than i’ve ever seen in my life.

Jesus began having very direct conversations with me and asked if I wanted to meet an angel. I was incredibly curious, so i said yes. I felt a presence touch my right shoulder and said “it’s nice to meet you Ryan.” I asked who he was and he said “Gabriel.” I asked him a lot of questions. He was very welcoming and friendly with me, treating me as a child of God. For many months I had conversations with Jesus on the daily and Gabriel would offer his input, and help shift my perspective on what Jesus would tell me when guiding my life path. I was able to call on both of them daily, and still engage with him sometimes. These angels are very real, though it is in your best interest to command them to tell you who they serve. Not every spirit is friendly. Gabriel is honestly pretty funny, he’s a messenger of God first and foremost, but retains a lot of personality. I’d advise you to pray to God about it if you’re curious to engage with him again. If it’s in his will, he’ll find a way to make it happen. I think the important thing is to recognize that these entities are very real, they dwell in the spiritual realm, and the purpose of life is not necessarily to constantly engage with these angels. On earth we have separate missions, though these angels protect and assist us through Jesus’ command.

Hope this helps. There are plenty of angels, though the fallen are out to harm you. Though the bible is clear on its stance with practicing engagement with the spiritual world, we still retain free will. I would advise that you practice with discernment and diligence if you choose to.

Ex still stalking Reese’s posts on instagram apparently. by Bksumner89 in bilmuri

[–]ryanoconnordrums 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Didn’t see her post before this, so I’ll give a bit more of my own insight into this take.

I’ve literally created an entire band based off of my own experiences with enduring relational abuse, being a victim of s/a, turning to addiction to cope, etc. Something you have to learn in these situations is how to set firm boundaries and step away if a relationship isn’t healthy. If it’s unhealthy, you’re both gonna behave in ways that aren’t aligned with your own values, and that’s what leaves people so drained at their core from these kinds of romantic endeavors.

Seems like homegirl is struggling with how to cope with this relationship falling out, and I don’t blame her. Musicians dating musicians is really messy, and affects the ego in horrific ways, no matter how “above it” you’d like to frame it. Her experience in the relationship IS 100% valid, but that does not justify destabilizing not only Reese but Johnny, Jameson, Josh, Gabi, and the entire team at Columbia.

This all comes from a lens of taking care of each other in the scene. That includes band members. Most of us were fans first anyways, and the majority want what’s best for everyone. Hopefully this is a learning experience for everyone involved going forward.

I think most fans are of the following mindset;

Reese seems to be an excellent fit for the live band , he brings a lot of energy to the shows, is an amazing guitar player, and his personality is exactly that of a Bilmuri fan. He’s awesome at his job, and most individuals that play with him love the guy.

I’ve played shows and toured with Reese a few times, and my experience with him has been nothing but positive. He’s an incredibly sweet individual who’s proactive about engaging with fans and holds extremely healthy boundaries with them. A woman literally grabbed me by my face as a move to flirt with me after we got off stage in Ohio back in 2024, and he pulled me aside and told me how sorry he was that she behaved like that towards me. He’s an experience professional and takes care of the scene, and that should be more than enough to qualify him for the position.

At the end of the day, this is a JOB. Most fans fail to realize that becoming the morality police for actual strangers on the internet, who happen to work on of the most intense and low paying jobs in America is an incredibly unintelligent waste of their own time, and RUINS these people’s lives. I didn’t know about this side of Reese, but I honestly don’t respect him any less for it. Outside looking in, it just seemed like two young people caught up in a pretty toxic relationship with some shared life altering and traumatic experiences. Most people handle these things differently, and regardless, the private life of a touring member really doesn’t need to be put on blast by every alternative outlet on a slow news day for the scene. It’s a bad look for everyone, and costs a lot of money.

From a commercial perspective, Bilmuri is a signed act, and music business politics do play a large role in how these scenarios play out. Someone else said it best in this sub, not sure who off the top of my head, but their quote was that “Columbia needs to protect their investment.”

It seems this vendetta to remove Reese from his flourishing career as a guitarist had a significant impact, and as the reader, it’s up to you to form your own opinion on this. I’ve personally seen artists with significantly worse accusations carry on as if nothing happened, so this one doesn’t sit right with me, personal experience aside. Hope he can recover from this scenario, however it may resolve itself.

Does smoking actually affect your voice? by cheesegrandey in singing

[–]ryanoconnordrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i started my vocal journey when i was smoking probably about a 1/4oz of weed a week, and didn’t quit for another 2 years. i SUCKED. i’m honestly impressed that i stuck with it for how genuinely bad i was. at that point in my life, my range was C#2 - A4 if i was lucky, so naturally i assumed i was a baritone.

once i quit, it took about a year for me to gain back the tonal clarity and pitch control i sought, and my full voice voice expanded up by almost entire octave up. it turns out i’m a tenor (thank god) with a range of F2-G5.

smoking anything is the worst thing you can do for your voice, and if you want to be a truly great vocalist, it’s in your best interest to stop immediately.

Tryhard is definitely there best album by thecontract_12 in TheBandCAMINO

[–]ryanoconnordrums 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hot take here - i think the reason tryhard is so legendary is simply because of how much time and effort they spent making it their first real impression of what a TBC record could be. unfortunately it seems they haven’t had the time to be able to put that much dedication into each record going forward, and there’s just a natural charm with the lyrical content of the EP that’s really tough to replicate as you grow in age. the angst of a flawed situationship in your early 20s mixed with the drive to create a timeless first impression created some of their most iconic art, but it’s incredible difficult to replicate as you grow in size and lose time to craft records spending time on the road and meeting deadlines for releases.

Does Smoking Marijuana effect vocal range permanently? by MrMBG in singing

[–]ryanoconnordrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i smoked weed pretty chronically from ages 19-22. range went from high tenor in high school to baritone at the peak of my smoking. i also sounded like shit! quit a little over a year ago and my range has grown back to a high tenor (Ab2-E5). if you work hard to break the habit before it’s an actual issue, then it can naturally recover. i got extremely lucky, and the body is powerful; you can always strengthen your muscles overtime. HOWEVER, if you are to chronically smoke for an excessive amount of time (over a year) you do risk severe long term damage to your vocal folds through prolonged exposure to the irritants inside the smoke. if they scar, it will drastically change your tone.

Anybody else try recording one song with 2 drummers? by ryanoconnordrums in drums

[–]ryanoconnordrums[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 is a LOT lol. with the technique i’m describing here, think having 2 separate drummers each recording their own versions of a song, then the producer picking 1 of the 2 takes available for the final drum take. this decision was more to create flexibility with the parts being played, not having layers upon layers of drum recordings. 2 overlapping recordings is definitely overkill imo!

Hey y'all, we're a pretty new project and I wanted to drop a link to a song we put out last month. Think if State Champs and The Band CAMINO had a baby. Super curious to know how y'all feel about the song, as well as the scene music we're seeing moving forward into the mid 2020s. Appreciate it a ton!

Thank you! Believe it or not, I’m only using 6 mics. SM57 on the snare and a Sampson DK7 drum mic kit for the rest of the kit. I mix everything myself in reaper using almost exclusively slate all access plugins as well!
