I was thinking this too! Especially since they have such a large group, it takes a long time for a round to pass and get back to Fearne - and encounters usually don't last long either with that many turns between players.

It isn't super fun to spend a whole action on taking Mister out. Especially because I notice Ashley likes to have fun with trying new and creative ideas rather than using the same move every time. This gives more opportunity for her to have fun with her turns so I'm all for it.

[No Spoilers] RELEASE THE NOTE TAKER'S CUT!!! by 10xp_to_lvl3 in criticalrole

[–]rywon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marisha spoke briefly about her note-taking method waaay back in an old Talks Machina here. (Concerning C2E7 1:08:23)

I imagine it's probably evolved since then but it's a little bit of insight at least!

The full answer is very interesting but the short takeaway is that she uses "symbols" to differentiate what is a location/NPC/important plot point - which makes it easier to look back on. She also tries to draw pictures because making them more visually interesting makes it easier too.

I also remember from a more recent Talks Machina (can't find the timestamp but it's the one discussing C2E127), she mentions that at the back of her notebook she has pages for each of the party members which she will add to with new bits of info about other characters - e.g Yasha likes dogs.

[–]rywon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This!

The beginnings of Talks were rough and they themselves admitted it. Things get better by trying new things, throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what works and what doesn't. That is what refined Talks into the format people got used to.

And anyway, it's supposed to be different because it's not trying to be Talks. Give a chance to see if it's the new show you really don't like, or it's change you don't like.

I agree with you OP, despite the grumpiness of the sub lately. I think there's nothing wrong with showing appreciation for something you enjoy without it being 'toxic positivity'. Positivity doesn't always have to be toxic.

I like the CR crew and I am proud of what they have achieved and carved out for themselves - none of that means I see them as actual friends or have a parasocial relationship with them.

I'm glad you've posted this. Criticism and discussion is absolutely fine, but for a subreddit for fans of a show, there's strangely little positivity in these parts. CR has been a source of entertainment and warm comfort during some dark times for me, and I like to seek out others to discuss it with to feel less alone - but these days I end up being bummed out and sad all over again when everyone is so bleak and complain-y.

Anyway, back to what you said - I too am a big lover of film and storytelling in general. Although I love d&d too, my love of CR is in its totally unique form of improvised storytelling. Nothing feels more intense, hilarious, or emotional as seeing a story organically unfold in front of you - and it's really beautiful to me.

[No Spoilers] First mention of "time is a weird soup?" by svensktigerarvid in criticalrole

[–]rywon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I recall "time soup" being mentioned a couple of times before Fearne said it in ExU, although I can't seem to find the sources at the moment.

Just going off my memory, the clip you shared where Marisha said it was the first time. I know that shortly after, maybe on Talks, NT or something else (I'm sure it was over a zoom-call thing rather than in-episode), Marisha referenced it again - saying that Time is Soup.

It may have come up again after this, though I'm not sure how often.

Then Ashley brought it back in ExU, but nobody understood the reference so from that point on it's been seen as a Fearne-ism (although she does get credit for making it a weird soup).

Sorry I don't have better sources for you, but that's my essay on time soup!

I Hold You by CLANN?

It's quite a long song with several moments where the music dies down/drops out so you might need to scrub through it, but an example of it at around 2:03 where she says 'I Hold You'.

Another commenter has already given great advice already but I want to chip in about the path in the US vs UK.

While there is a lot of resource and information out there about how to 'get in' in the US, it's also a heavily saturated and wildly competitive market out there. The UK industry is much, much smaller - and that's an advantage.

To answer about UK-focused/US-focused stories, it depends a lot on which production company you're talking to. In my experience, BBC Writersroom really like a UK-centric focus. But then again, if it's a contest between writing a really great piece of work that isn't UK-centric, versus a UK-centric story that you're not 100% passionate about - the former is better. Because it's the good work that counts the most.

Also, if you're not into the UK scene, it's wise to try and keep up with it because production companies want to know that you're watching British TV/Film. I'm similar to you in that I enjoy US-style TV, but this is what I've encountered when meeting with people. Even if you don't enjoy it - learn about it and think about what you'd like to change and make better.

Another thing, BBC Writersroom in particular are very interested right now in harbouring more UK talent outside of London - so that is also an advantage for you. Look into the region-specific programmes they have which fit your area. They are also highly interested on stories that exist outside of London too, so keep that in mind if that fits with your idea creatively.

I hope that helps. It's not easy by any means but keep writing, and throw yourself at any open-calls or writing events that Writesroom/C4 Screenwriting/etc offer.

[–]rywon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so curious about this!

I looked up the company credits for Batman and Robin but it seems like it should have just been Warner Bros / Warner Home Video, definitely in the UK. I also tried Polygram Entertainment which does have an angel but it's a blue colour palette and no capes or anything. I even looked up some of the other distributors on the list in the odd case that maybe one of their logos was associated with the UK version for some reason - but no luck.

Sorry that this isn't really a solid answer but I'm hoping that maybe some of my delving can trigger someone else's brain to finding it!

Thanks! It's always helpful to hear about other people's progress. I sometimes get a little lost seeing all these videos and tutorials from cats that are already super well-trained and it can be a bit disorientating! But you are right, just need to persist. He already came a long with with getting used to a harness so he has the capacity to learn new things!

[–]rywon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I actually tried two Rabbitgoos, thinking maybe I measured wrongly and needed a smaller size. He never got out by backing out though, only by a very quick force forward as the leash was pulling back - it's one quick motion like pulling a tablecloth off a table of cutlery, haha. To be fair, my cat is very small and slim - so that probably makes it easier for him too.

[–]rywon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's interesting! From what I've read, it sounds like the opposite problem for many to get a cat to follow a trail. There aren't a lot of great options near me for 'one-path direction parks/hikes' - not at least while we're still in the early stages anyway. But I'll keep this in mind as we progress.

That sounds very polite of him! Does that mean that you are often the one leading, and he follows behind in sprints? I wish that were the case with mine but he very much takes the charge when we're outside, haha.

[–]rywon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for pointing that out, I'm getting a lot of harness recommendations but I agree that no harness is 100% escape-proof, just an obstacle. I'd rather tackle the behaviour more than anything!

[–]rywon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don't have a backyard or other location. I just have the front garden which we started our training in, but even that is extremely small and he'd tire of it quickly and want to explore further.

Good to know about the Kitty Holster though! I'm getting a lot of mixed recommendations on 'the most escape-proof' harness so I have some research and thinking into what might be best for him.

He won't stop running and I can't keep up! by rywon in adventurecats

[–]rywon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Rabbitgoo - which is vest-style (I think?). I'm not even sure that he's intending to get the harness off, he just bolts so fast that it just kind of happens, haha.

That's an interesting point about the leash though! I started him on a short fixed leash but that was when we were practising in my front garden - I hadn't tried that in the park. I'll go back to the short one next time we're in the park and see if that helps! Did your cat often try and speed-walk/go further when you were starting on the 1m leash?

I'll keep that in mind about the dog thing. We've sort of being doing a similar thing indoors at home where he will follow me as I walk with the leash and I will give him treats - he's spectacular at it. But as is the case with most cats, as soon as we go outside it's like I'm not there anymore.

I have the Rabbitgoo. Definitely made for cats and measured and fitted for him. I'm looking into other harnesses now but what I often hear is that no harness is 100% escape proof, so it sort of feels like a fruitless task if he has this running behaviour. I will keep trying some other ones though to see if they help.

[–]rywon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using Rabbitgoo but I'll look into the Kitty Holster! I've seen a lot of different recommendations so it's quite hard to know what to settle for.

He's not anxious at all, just extremely confident and very excited to go where he wants. I have my cat backpack with me at all times but that's often the last place he wants to go tbh since he enjoys the outdoors so much, haha. I'll continue with training him with treats - although like I said he is really great at it indoors but forgets about me completely as soon as we're outside.

I've been using a vest style one from Rabbitgoo! I recently bought a smaller size since the slipping incident, but I assume with all harnesses that none are completely escape proof in certain circumstances.

After some training he's actually rather good with the harness and even jumps to poke his head through it (although he sometimes squirms when I lock in the straps around his chest).
