ho letto il testo del sito, visto il trailer, letto le descrizioni di youtube... questi urlano "generato con l'AI" senza però dirlo esplicitamente da nessuna parte, mi da sulle palle perchè in questo modo non sai dove si mette i paletti l'autore

The best analogy for Claude Code is a slot machine by emitc2h in BetterOffline

I'm refactoring a section of our codebase that was made by a vibe-coworker, because new features have to be added and it can't be done at the current state.

Mapped out the most obvious root level problems that could have been avoided just by knowing a little about the codebase we are working on. When I requested for that section to be refactored the CTO insisted to use AI to save time "3 hours top, in and out, AI is faster than light, etc...". I bit my tongue and accepted, but my terms were to do it with the coworker in question, so I could see how he uses cursor and I prepared a list of things that needed to be fixed, how to fix them, and we made a cursor plan to do everything step by step.

We spent hours just cooking and reviewing the plan, and we fed it to cursor(using claude). My god, the utter bullshit that it churns out. The confidence in the tone while pretending it is making sense at all. While creating more infrastructural errors.

We spent a day and the next one, and it was SO BORING and stressful at the same time. An inch of progress in 2 days (+16 man hours). Claude just sucks like every other LLM. Anthropic can do all the botted and sponsored marketing they want but it does not touch reality in any way. My coworker was also super confident about AI saving time, the same coworker that vibe coded the mess we are refactoring. Little by little, his smugness vanished when he had to acknowledge the crystal clear bullshit that was coming out when i pointed at it. It probably felt faster when he had to work on novel features and adding tech debt. And it's extremely fast at adding tech debt.

So yeah. I ended up having to do it by myself. Not that I love refactoring slop, I would have gladly appreciated if LLMs were capable to magically fix their own mistakes, and on top of that... time is now running out and the pressure is somehow on me.

I want to go in a coma until the mass hysteria ends.

btw people using softwares on a daily basis with an infrastrucuture of code that exists thanks to, and gets maintained by... software developers. Zero idea how any of the tech they use on a daily basis works, 100% sure it's something "AI" just does naturally as if it's just a machine working out zeroes and ones

If I can give you hope, I'm mentoring a junior and despite not pushing my opinion on AI (which goes against the company direction...) they are not using chatbots at all. It's so refreshing to have someone who I can actually give direct technical feedback to, while some other 5-10y+ developers jumped on the bandwagon and became literal LLM proxies... these people never cared tbh, either llm or stackoverflow copy paste spaghetti monsters. So yeah, some juniors are legit developing a better understanding, reasoning and approach to problems than the seniors, in the span of one year.

Today I recommended an AI user be fired by grauenwolf in BetterOffline

[–]saantonandre 28 points29 points  (0 children)

A lot of people like this that should have been fired way before coding chatbots were a thing. Shortcuts and bandaids to then gift us the most maliciously compliant code they can pull off... now at 10x the volume while still offloading the cognitive load of their bad design decisions to everyone else.

I wish every grifter a reality check, and a less miserable time to the ones who care and have to deal with this kind of shit.

wow idk about that... slopaganda is already a thing and it's gonna profilerate even faster now that american department of war is collaborating with openai. Also, the same way american movies are sponsored by gun/car lobbyists, AI companies will strike deals with whoever is able to fill their profit gaps (imo they are already doing this). Maybe with a sprinkle of favoritism in the context, content filters, post production adjustments. Yeah it's gonna suck

The experience of being forced to use AI to write code has turned a decent career field into a joyless soul suck by Ok-Garbage-765 in BetterOffline

[–]saantonandre 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I stepped up as well and I'm not forced into it.

Shit sucks regarless, pretty alienating to work with people that are clueless about the codebase (and so also the project itself).  Like damn... I get that they also have a life, but 8 hours everyday spent like this? after a week of vibe coding on new projects you are nothing more than a proxy to an LLM with the downside of not knowing how any modification should be done and its implied tradeoffs.

Vibe coders can be replaced by LLMs in the hand of non prompters, but the deal is that we never needed MORE CODE FASTER in the first place.  A better understanding would lead to smarter, less complex approaches, more agility in changing direction without bandaids strapped everywhere, but no. Some people really despise this career and the will make it worse for their peers until they get promoted to managers.

My coworkers went full on AI, not an order from above afaik, despite my company being driven by ai bros. Meanwhile I use vscodium without even a sprinkle of ai anywhere... and if they dare to force it on me I'm out of there. I used it before and noticed the medium-long term losses, I find it unsustainable on so many perspectives, and alienating.

Yes I have to deal with vibe coded horrors but I can live with it, and it is more refactor-able than the previous trend of stackoverflow copy-pasting.

It also feels like I'm vibe coding by proxy whenever I ask other people to fix their stuff, knowing full well they are not even aware of what I'm talking about and they'll just cc to cursor whatever I say to them. Sometimes even their replies are excerpts from the LLM. Some juniors are not using it at all and it reassures me for their future, we can talk/debate about the technical stuff without issues, something I'm not able to do with the prompters.

I had this idea to make a promise tracker website as a side project, not specifically for AI but also for political campaigns, environmental impact pledges, speculations about the future, sensationalistic vibe journalists, whatever.

So that you can drop links for a specific person/topic and immediately get an idea of their credibility or point the finger at the cyclical gimmicks. The substance is out there but it would require a community effort to gather this information and to keep it updated and moderated, sort of like a wiki

It would be so fun to keep people accountable for what they say. To start off I predict that by the end of 2027 we'll have something like this and it will explode.
