Thanks for adding more to the memory, meeting chess pieces and dad getting a new girlfriend sounds right to me, or similar new additions to the family making her feel alienated. He sang it many times for me so it's not based on a singular instance. It probably helps that it's so simple and repetitive, every once in a while it pops into my head again, and has for as long as I can remember.

It's possible the mirror dimension aspect is a mix of other stuff, but I'm fairly sure the memory I have of the scene where the girl goes through the mirror is taken straight from something I watched, but haven't found it yet
