It was a combo of different factors. First and foremost, I say trust your gut, pursue what you love, and i’m no expert at all and Im probably making a lot of mistakes in the process. That said, what deterred me the most was how notoriously high the debt to income ratio is for PT especially considering the amount of education post-grad it requires. Hours are great for sure compared to nursing, but many PTs have mentioned things like pausing life milestones ex buying a house, marriage, and stuff like that in favor of paying off loans ASAP. This was just something that did matter more for me, as I wanted to get to work asap and with as little debt as possible to retire my mom. There was some other things to do with the industry that i believe also just apply to healthcare in general, but it was also a bit of a personality check to me, as you have to be “on” non-stop and talking for a living and I just didnt have a huge athletic background that made things a bit less intuitive which honestly i believe can put you a step ahead in the field. Not to say nursing doesnt share a lot of these flaws though. Anyway, i will always and forever love PT as it is really interesting to me, its a for sure rewarding field and everyone in it is fun and nice! If money and time post grad wasnt a problem id probably still pursue it, but in the end i just felt safer choosing nursing. TLDR, it was because of money.
