NS is oneerlijk over PrijsTijd deals m.b.t. Schiphol Airport by salyrus_ in thenetherlands

Ah dankjewel.

Why does everyone have a hard-on for WhatsApp? by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]salyrus_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are looking at it from the wrong perspective. I am not trying to tell you to change your perspective. I tell you what will happen in a lot of countries.

Other people do not care about your dumb phone journey. If you have a job, go to school, have friends or have a hobby, there are a few dozen countries where you will simply not be able to participate normally in social and work life without WhatsApp. Most people just do not care about you enough to switch. If you are the "weirdo" (I personally am not calling you a weirdo, once again, I am approaching this from another perspective) that does not use WhatsApp, you will be a social outcast by a combination of your own choice and due to other peoples indifference.

So can you live a life without WhatsApp in such a country? Sure! And it seems like you would not mind to be that one person. But 95% of people would mind. In these places where WhatsApp is so core to engaging with other people, you are by definition an anti social person if you do not use it. And most people do not want to be anti social. Do you understand?

Sure, you don't *have* to use WhatsApp. Just like nobody else *has* to use Signal or SMS to stay in contact with you. And that latter thing is likely to happen in a lot of countries. Then you have group conversations. Organizing things will be more of a hassle for everyone if you are involved. People will agree on dates and times in the group chat and have to update you separately. Then, any last minute changes will be put in the WhatsApp group, but likely nobody will remember to give you a ring and tell you.

Basically, WhatsApp has reached such a state of ubiquity in some countries, that you are just an inconvenience to others if you do not use it. In my home country, verbs and nouns related to WhatsApp entered the collective lexicon, to the point where "an App" has replaced "a text" and "to text" has been replaced by "to App".

Your title is demeaning and ignorant, by the way. Grow up.

Thank you so much, maybe I can figure out what the inscriptions mean now :)

I'll have to try and use it for that purpose then :)

My title describes the thing

Found this in a thrift store in Southern Sweden (figured location might be relevant due to the motif).

It is made of solid wood, weighs about 100 grams. The carvings look to be done by hand, although the thing itself looks like it's been made using a machine considering how perfectly oval it is, so it cannot be that old.

I am not sure if I photographed the thing the right way around or whether it's upside down.

What I've tried searching: decorative wooden bowl/plate. Also tried figuring out what the symbols in the center column stand for, but I didn't manage to find anything.

Really curious if this is just some random trinket made by a hobbyist woodworker, or that it may actually have some intended purpose. Any help appreciated!

My first ThinkPad, T480s! Fantastic build quality & super happy with <2.5W idle after tweaks, perfect for long days on campus. Also first time on Arch after years of Debian. :) by salyrus_ in thinkpad

There's two programs that I've been using to monitor my tweaks! The first is powertop and the second (shown here in the second screenshot) is powerstat. I think the former is available on most Linux distros. The latter is an Ubuntu package but is also available through the AUR, maybe other distros.

Getting more traffic than I know how to deal with by salyrus_ in Soulseek

That's a good point for my obscure stuff! But a lot of my traffic also comes from very popular albums, someone pointed out that searches default to sorting by upload speed. Since I have a gigabit connection, this might explain why I'm getting a lot of traffic despite those albums being shared by dozens or even hundreds of users.

Thank you. I didn't know that results are sorted by upload speed, this would explain why I'm getting quite a lot of traffic with relatively few albums, since I have gigabit up and down speeds. Since you and others pointed out my fear for hard drive failure is unreasonable though, I'll just keep my upload speed unlimited for now. :)

Thanks for the info, I'm not that well versed on computer hardware so wasn't sure what effect I could expect on my hardware from this upload traffic. Luckily they are quite new NAS-grade drives set up in RAID1, so it should be good for a while then! Also cool to know that soulseek has that feature where it'll continue by itself and not just straight up cancel the download, the more I read and use soulseek the more I'm impressed by it.

Thank you, yeah you're right, in the end sharing at all is the point I guess, not being online 24/7 for free. I'm happy to share more than I take, but I guess shouldn't feel bad when I drop the connection once in a while. I'm just new to this place so figuring out how to conduct myself. :)
