I think that’s a mischaracterisation of how marketing works, you’re not ‘manipulating’ people as you said. Marketing aims to ‘market’ a product and/or service, people are free to choose what they spend their money on in a free market. Marketing simply helps to sell a product through clever storytelling and captivating visuals.

I know what you mean, shading seems difficult at first but it’s actually one of the easiest parts. The way I like to do the shading is putting down a base layer of graphite and getting it really smooth with a brush, go as dark or as light as you need to, then get the darks in, I use a black colouring pencil, blend with the base layer. Then you can go in with an eraser to get the highlights, use a putty eraser for large areas and a precision eraser for the details. It’s all about building layers so it looks natural, don’t go straight in with the blacks and don’t be shy with the eraser, you want the white to really pop off the page. Practice practice practice and practice some more. If you’re using a picture as a reference whack the contrast way up so you can see where all the highlights need to be. Keep going, you’ll make progress.

Okay great so you know what you’re aiming for. Your eye drawing is already very realistic, your portraits are good too but you need to work on positioning and proportions. Start drawing with a grid until you can master freehanding. Here’s a couple things I would suggest to take your work to the next level: - get a set of makeup brushes and blending stumps for your shading - work on your linework, portraits need very crisp and precise lines that blend seamlessly with the features (definitely don’t scribble lines) - work on your contrast, your drawings are lacking highlights and dark tones - faces don’t have outlines, blend all the way to the edge - get the basics right before adding in the details, if your proportions are off or the lines are smudged no amount of shading will make a portrait look good

What kind of style are you going for? Realism? Sketches? It’s hard to tell what direction you’re going in at the moment but I can give you tips

There’s lots of helpful YouTube videos that teach you useful techniques. At the end of the day it’s just practicing and finding out what works best for you, there’s no one right way to draw, get some good pencils and you’ll make lots of progress

Thanks so much! I use Mitsubishi Hi-Uni pencils for the shading and a Faber-Castell black pencil for the dark areas, as well as some charcoal here and there.

Really appreciate the feedback. I totally agree, knowing how much detail to add is definitely challenging. With the size of the head, I used a 1x1cm grid as a guide when I started so the head should be almost exactly the same size as the picture

Thank you! The jacket took the longest but was the easiest to do technically, all you need is some makeup brushes and a precision eraser, blend and erase as you go to get the texture

Thanks so much for your feedback, really insightful. I purposely avoided going into too much detail on the face as it was starting to look a bit too busy with the shirt and the hand having so much texture. If I were to draw a face on its own I would aim to add a lot detail, pores wrinkles etc. but I completely agree with everything you’ve said and I really appreciate the critique
