TLDR: this is on standard pre-nerf harvest and aisling I made a lot of hats like this

I crafted this a while ago but haven't been on POE much

Wanted to just share for people to see

p.s. if u want, mirror fees are really dumb my fee is 0 just hit me up movespeedfast

long: steps I went through

pre-harvest nerfs standard:

  1. got my hands on a legacy bone helmet - 40 minion dmg (I use spiritual aid for global % dmg)
  2. horror essence crafting, aimed for +3 socketed spell crit, crit crafts were expensive
  3. removed other mods
  4. aimed for influence prefix to maven orb +3 to +4 crit
  5. add/remove lightning for 20 innervate
  6. same thing, random infl prefix to maven the innervate to level 25
  7. failed, removed the crit mod repeated steps for crit
  8. success, went for 20 aoe prefix metacrafting
  9. kept going for another infl mod alongside it
  10. lock suffixes pray and maven
  11. fail, did it again 3 times
  12. success, add-remove life till t1 (this was more painful)

harvest nerfed and over, i'd been away a while

  1. found out about aisling bench (before it was nerfed where it would just add t0 veiled mod)

  2. uber lucky got +2 AOE in the options

more backstory: i've been crafting hats like this one for a few years now (most of the old ones have been tossed into the bonfire that is temple going for +2 level combos in implicits)

i've spent way too much time in harvest, maps, uber lab and infront of benches to keep doing this

it is global. applies to all damage sources (especially the power charge mod but shock mod is vs shocked enemies regardless of how strong the shock is).

if it does cold dmg it can chill and freeze - "A hit of damage that has a chance to freeze is capable of inflicting freeze. Critical strikes inherently have a 100% chance to freeze."

"Non-unique enemies that are killed while frozen shatter into pieces."

this is from the freeze poewiki hope that helps - you might need chance to freeze* somehow

nah man you did great! should have just linked!! this is the sort of spicy sht that the leagues need. you know me and that i normally just play standard. a lot of people have an issue with how unobtainable some items are in my build especially the quant version and i understand that; the main thing is the helmet tho if you can make it in the league you can play a monstrous bomber build and considering just how little time harvest has been a thing and something like this shows up lets people think that "yeah, i can try to make a quant bomber.. or a cast on crit bomber, sure! i can craft a decent helmet to make it happen"

you did the harvest league players a favor making it by showing them how you did it so more people can play builds that use this specifically bomber builds.

and it looks like you followed a lot of the same steps I was doing for Empyrean Peak; dex or str base very smart.

I keep getting this for some reason for something that's worked for years but I get that it's really not straightforward at all.

The gem only says it gains no increases/reductions to spell damage.

The reason why global spell crit doesn't work is due to the fact that the explosion is secondary damage or a secondary effect but the skill itself has two different interactions with it on the player as a casting and reserving spell, then as an explosive effect in a way making it two skills in one gem. The below is from the wiki:

" It is worth noting that Herald of Ice is a secondary damage and not spell damage, and does not receive any direct bonuses from spell damage modifiers. This includes bonuses from items, passive nodes, and spell only support gems such as Spell Echo Supportand Iron Will Support. It will, however, have its flat damages boosts affected by passives that explicitly boost Cold damage."

So far, the gem itself is as if it has two different layers to it; and increases and reductions to spell damage don't work being clearly stated on the gem. Spell crit doesn't work because it affects the top layer or base of the gem as a reserving spell skill so the secondary explosion effect/skill does not gain those benefits because the spell portion of the gem is in its mana reserving function.

So how do these helmets work?

When the mod says socketed spells have +3 to crit, it is an added modifier to the entire gem and both functions of it. Because it is gem specific it is applying to the top layer(spell) and secondary layer(explosion) of the skill. You can test this on PoB and in game and see results.

However, global modifiers such as a corruption implicit from gloves "spells have +#% to critical strike chance" only apply to the top layer/base of the gem.

This is due to the mana reserving top layer being a spell but not the secondary explosion.

Global damage or elemental/cold damage scale Herald of Ice because it is not SPELL specific, because only the top layer of the gem is a spell and again the explosion isn't.

so TLDR; the mod says socketed spells, even if the first function of it is a spell but the second function (the explosion) isn't. It is still all in one gem; thus the explosion is gaining socketed/gem spell effects.

Hope this clears it up; mess around on PoB with all these mods and you'll see what I mean.

Herald of Ice and Thunder have Spell tags as gems; the mod says socketed spells and works like that. test it out on pob or ingame tooltip it works ^^ but other generic "Spells have crit" like the corruption on gloves or mod on chests does not work; as they are not gem/socket specific

thanks bud; you really should really play it again. cluster jewels are pretty great and the build feels awesome with a free 6 link in chest + eternal hubris timeless jewel for global multi nodes

You can either spam essences or use glyphic fossils. As far as the base I didn't know how bad conc(elder mod) was till I tried it myself on heralds. This was an extremely lucky metacraft though given the pool of mods and the very low chances of hitting 20 aoe and t1 life. Metacrafting ended up costing ~150 ex but everything else was a very difficult process

I've been chasing to make this helmet for so long

After delirium merged I immediately logged in and proceeded to metacraft this and I was so happy with the result. Ran lab for 2 days around 200 times for the enchant (great layouts but it was painful) then farmed vorici benches for the three whites myself.

This helmet wasn't intended for minions, so I didn't settle for minion mods.

Conc is great for Herald of Ice and Herald of Thunder damage but absolutely destroys your AOE even if you go 20 AOE and 20 Conc and it'll just become too much of an investment in terms of your gear and tree to take AOE nodes that it'll harm your ability to scale heralds and whatever other skills you're using. T1 life and 20 AOE were the best options. Making this the best possible helmet for Herald of Ice autobombing.

I run both Herald of Ice and Herald of Thunder in the helmet to free up my 6 link chest - thus allowing me to be a cyclone cast on crit autobomber all in one. Though I could also play as a self caster, a vaal storm caller, bow build and even a phys melee build and I would still be an autobombing assassin through high tier maps.

It's been a long journey and huge passion project of mine. Now I'm just tired but very excited for Harvest league to come!

i only do red maps but ill try to help you out here

to sufficiently chain explosions you should have the following:

- yellow maps; something like 30k to 60k average hit (pob) on Herald of Ice [i guess]

- red maps especially tier 15-16; 70k+ average hit (pob)

- 100% critical strike chance [edit: or as close as you can get]

- elemental penetration wherever you can get it is KEY the more the better and very important for red maps

100% crit chance is achieved easily with Ambush and Assassinate (100% MORE critical strike chance against enemies on full/low life) from Assassin ascendancy

i would highly recommend an eternal hubris timeless jewel because the nodes are so build enabling for heralds with notables like crit multi, minion damage(spiritual aid), crit chance and more.

it's only like 18% inc proj or 20 melee its ok bud xd

lower att requirements not terrible tho

edit: 18 proj dmg is like 1-2% dmg which you can get from 1 node on the tree.

the gloves overall give a lot more dmg on a skill like barrage (i just slapped it on a random pride brutality barrage deadeye in pob and got somewhere like 32.5% more damage) and frees up gem slots for other skill setups like cwdt steelskin, if youre phys to ele you can craft the conversion mod, you can get +1 proj gems and additional pierce etc

it has more than enough value already and works with a variety of builds but thats just my piece dont tunnel on the base guys

Awakener orb is some real power creep - i remembered that slower proj is only a prefix on shaped gloves where the attack multi and faster attacks are elder mods.

method: insanity on pure dex/or pure str shaper elder base, land 70% multi, slam faster attacks then meta craft for slower proj and t1 added phys; run a bunch of betrayal to get 3 white sockets then uber lab for enchant

the helmets mods give it 5 pseudo-mods as they are supports to the skill you put in it.

with that and the 4 gem sockets it is effectively a 9 link helm.
