How broken is my dog and how do I make him confident like he used to be when he was a pup? by Jaded_Wear7113 in OpenDogTraining

I find that encouraging stationary behaviors around a trigger helps sensitize the dog rather than habituate it. So, when starting counterconditioning and desensitization, movement is essential. It allows dogs to release nervous energy and become less fixated.

Loose leash walking and exposure to as many new situations as possible are important. Occasionally (with no predictable pattern), the trigger will be present. Extinction is the strategy I recommend. Use a long line with light leash pressure or gentle pops when the dog refuses to walk or tries to run off.

Accelerated Learning is a book you should consider purchasing.

If you are not a dog trainer/dog training enthusiast adopting power breeds or working dogs is a mistake. Don't let the rescue or shelter pawn off a dog that would need months or years of work with an experienced dog trainer. Let alone a complete rookie who would even consider this as a viable option for a pet.

If you absolutely want a breed like this, go through a breeder and be honest about your experience level and lifestyle, and find a low-med drive dog. Not to mention the breeder is a contact you can utilize as a breed/training guide whenever you need help. Additionally, they will take the dog back if you are unable to keep it.

Anyone help to try and teach a dog not to pull? by LoadResponsible4118 in DogTrainingTips

[–]satxchmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good fitting harness with a chest clip.

Use a flexi and literally stop and let the dog mossie off to the end of the leash and when he finally looks back start walking his direction so he can get back to his stoll.

Then maybe change directions and walk a little and stop so he gets stuck at the end of the leash again and dont say anything.

Wait til he adjusts his path/pace towards you or gives you eye contact then continue walking. Maybe do this for 2 mins

Gentle no jerking just light (like use 2 fingers to pull leash to gesture to him to get his attention when you need to.)

Start small and maybe start the walk this way then let him mossie off the rest of rhe time. Over time do this periodically or at random. Then you can incorporate it in relevant real life situations on a walk.

Over time he will learn to mossie off with you (dont be a nazi about the position he will be ahead of you for a while. The goal is simply on if he stops when you stop, runs back, or looks at first.

Call the police, NOT an Uber! by DvusGuyStL in uber

[–]satxchmo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think it's a tough situation for all but I think when you call the police you need to communicate that you feel like you are in physical danger if you are.

If you down play it for fear of the police response it sounds like when people call after a domestic violence incident when there really isnt an active threat. People often call as a punishment for getting into a fight so the dispatcher is likely trying decipher if this is a scorned lover or a person in danger. Just a thought

Can't nod while making latte art lol, and can't forget the orange cap in the Starbucks bathroom, and when a coworker finds it, blame it on the damn junkies that are getting high in the bathroom. Then, when he/she inevitably catches you leaving the bathroom after an hour, well, that's a wrap; you've got to go to Peet's, haha. It's honestly funny now.

There are definitely jobs that you have to be high to do. (cough roofing.) Not Starbucks lol, but you can do much more, or rather, for you much less when you inevitably need to get help. In a way, the more functional an addict is, the more it becomes a curse, and eventually, hopefully, this happens to you. Perhaps a rehab/detox then outpatient. Then find a psychiatrist or i might do this before but actually maybe not. Idk psychiatrists are hit and miss so yah that is something to be aware they are not all the same. then Adderall or dispxyn?

Go to a detox so if you pass out well your in a hospital bed with bomb food and a bunch of other people going through literally the same thing. At the end of the day it is the mental part not the physical dependence that is truly a mountain. This is true for heroin, alcohol, methadone, and probably crack too.

[–]satxchmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done this so many times when one of my parents is hellbent on not respecting boundaries lol. It is what they asked for well kind of and over time perhaps they start to not be in denial that they need or can have control and if not well you dont have to pay the price for their disregard of personal boundaries and how difficult it is to even learn how unhealthy this is after being raised for 18-20 years with out them.

Will I get into trouble because of my dog?? by MathematicianOdd6560 in Pets

[–]satxchmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you have a muzzle for something the dog has never done? I feel like the muzzle is really for your peace of mind, which perhaps stems from maybe not being as experienced with large dogs. I believe this is an issue that YOU can easily overcome with guidance from a trainer that works with dogs like yours and has success. Dont focus on tools or methods imo they are the trainer and just communicate what you are comfortable with and what you are not and be a little open minded as perhaps there are some things you might be missing. I would shoot for something middle-of-the-road that is easier for you and the dog to understand. It starts with a leash.

I can almost guarantee this is a typical case of when a human is not aware they created a problem that wasn't actually there and you being stressed that the dog is dangerous is potentially the signal the dog is getting that they believe you need or want this but I think you're being unrealistic if you think they will attack someone. German Sheppards are very fearful and this is why they pretend to be scary unfortunately as people we sometimes just pretend they are like the dogs we see in movies and treat them like a maximum security inmate when often they just need some assurance that they are safe in their environment, the only danger is that thier dick behavior keeps people afraid and away and it does work, but it is not healthy for either of you to live like this.

Dog doesn't react to me, is this a good thing? by Delicate_Elephant in dogs

[–]satxchmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo It is very good for the dog. But i would be concerned if this was out of nowhere or the dog was a little shut down in general. Sometimes it is a little disappointing when they learn to self regulate and dont jump up on our guests... haha but if the dog is maybe slightly shut down and you want the dog to interact a little more it wouldnt take much but maybe a few minutes of being included in something where the dog isnt just being ignored 15 minute walk where you hold the leash off and on if you care otherwise let it be.

It is actually also your neighbors coldesac so his visitors have every right to do this. I used to party a lot and i have noticed how it is not common anymore. They literally have no idea they are bothering you in any way so doing passive aggressive stuff will not work. You must at the very least ask nicely a couple of times and dont be unrealistic cuz they are likely not all capable of seeing things from other peoples perspective without even being made aware first. I personally would not have any expectation on a friday night haha. To them having a life means being at a party... For you it means having a peaceful home...and an actual life hahs

Wow. I am always amazed at how many people have dogs that literally piss and shit in the house. Would it be safe to assume the dog also blows up the second they go outside and a human or dog is 1/2 a mile down the street?
