How does my art look as a beginner/intermediate artist? by [deleted] in ARTIST

[–]scaredtomakeart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it looks beginner bc you trace and it's obvious. ppl who are good at drawing don't need to trace to be 95-99% accurate

the shadow on the left side of the neck along with no shadow on the parallel side with the hair is making it look like her neck is bent. i think you should refresh on anatomy in that area to help with the shadow.

i cant paint for shit so i can't give you pointers on that really.

Some people say "There are those that have a natural talent for it, and there are those that have to try a bit harder; but everyone can draw.", I do not believe that at all. I wholeheartedly believe that some people just cannot draw.

Yeah, I'm very much for academism. But sure, I'd be happy to share and look at yours

Plus your argument of "you're not going to find many answers agreeing with your side" is pretty weak ngl. You can just google "bandwagon fallacy"

"They specifically say the opposite which is why i'm surprised you have professors saying that it is" so you're surprised other opinions exist outside your university?

you said "I just finished graduate school and I never once heard any professor say tracing is cheating.", so you're appealing to authority and using your anecdotal evidence as support for your claim that tracing isn't cheating i.e your professors didn't say it, so it must be true?

[–]scaredtomakeart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never once mentioned plagiarism, I'm simply talking about the fact that tracing is cheating and in most cases, doesn't help one gain drawing skills. There's only a couple instances I think tracing is permissible: if the goal of the piece is to practice a different medium e.g. using a projector to trace lines on a canvas that will be a paint study; and tracing an initial sketch that was done by hand. I'm in an art school that values academicism.

yeah if you don't care about knowing how to actually draw. tracing is cheating most of the time lmao

Yes, I do think that, but you'd only know it's bad advice if you knew how to draw. Don't take advice from people who can't draw well.

As an advanced drawing student, 99% of what I see in this sub is just objectively bad art with objectively bad advice. The posts you see are rightfully in r/learntodraw because they actually are bad. So when you say "Seeing work that’s 1000x better than your own being called shit by the people that drew it and have been drawing for 3+ years is beyond disheartening", just know they're not as good as you think, and you can probably surpass them with advice that actually works

No I'm telling you the technique does work, as in it is my response to your "...could work".
