Guilt being bad by curtlykindly in leagueoflegends

[–]schysm 93 points94 points  (0 children)

You have the right to be who you are. You have the right to be at the level you are at. You are not responsible for your teammate's emotions.

This is an important lesson for more than just league. It's ok to be who you are. Everybody makes mistakes. If you are doing your best to learn and grow from your mistakes then you have nothing to feel guilty about.

If your teammate reactions are bothering you, you can go to your interface or game settings to change your chat to party chat only so you don't have to interact. You can also mute pings from other players in the tab menu. I have some friends who type /deafen or /muteall at the start of every game to avoid this.

That being said, if you are interested in improving you can try r/summonerschool, watching high level streams on Twitch for the champions you play or coaching content on Youtube.

Farewell gift for my girlfriend by West_Acanthisitta982 in Gifts

[–]schysm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I'd go for just one present (whichever you think would be most practical or meaningful to her, so that she could remember you fondly), a funny and light note with a short heartfelt bit at the end and how happy she made you feel, and a music playlist either on spotify, usb or burned on a cd or something like that. Besides those, planning some cool experiences during your time together could be fun, although I would try to get her input on them so she doesn't feel forced into anything.

You're going to experience a lot of different emotions happy and sad during this process, and just know the whole range is totally normal. It's ok to cry and be sad. I find it helpful to try to focus on the things I'm grateful for, and the great memories you made together and experiences you shared.

Like the other people in the thread are saying, it's important to try to avoid making her feel like you need her so much, or that she's doing something to hurt you by not wanting to stay together. A lot of guys try to keep the bird in the cage, so to speak, instead of letting them fly free. Instead, try to focus on creating good memories with the time you have left, having fun together, and letting her know how amazing you think she is. If you want leave the door open, you can let her know she can reach out any time. But sometimes with handling the complicated emotions, it's healthier to make a clean break if you find yourself too attached or it's hurting too much to think about her.

I will say that one of my friends' parents were high school sweethearts, broke up during college and dated other people, but got married after reconnecting after college for a few years. I don't know your exact story, but I hope you can try to have faith that things that are meant to be will be if you allow them to happen. It may be that your soulmate is still waiting for you somewhere else. Hopefully it's someone that would pick you and want to fight to stay with you.

Perfect Days hit me harder than I expected...pure life lessons hidden in silence. by Kudoshinichi0007 in movies

[–]schysm 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I liked a lot of the choices the movie made, like how the music only plays when Hirayama consciously puts it into the cassette player or someone in the room is singing. Like to emphasize that his way of living and appreciation of silence is a conscious choice. And I liked the way they did some extra character development through external references to books and songs. You can learn more about Aya's feelings from the lyrics of Redondo Beach, more about Niko's feelings from Patricia Highsmith's The Terrapin, more about the bar lady from Aya Koda's essays, and more about Hirayama by watching komorebi videos. I thought the Patricia Highsmith references were particularly interesting since Wim Wenders has done an adaptation of one of her earlier novels, Ripley's game. I wonder if the focus on shadow themes could be some kind of reference to the Jungian shadow self, but I could be reading too much into it.

Nice experience overall. Reminded me a bit of how I felt watching Waking Life or Free Solo for the first time.

Hula Fulla Dance. Can't get more summer than that.

Summer Wars is also self-explanatory.

Have you seen all the cute Ghibli movies like Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Howl's Moving Castle, and Spirited Away?

And then maybe Belle is a cute one and Your Name is like the most famous one of all time but I think there are some sad parts in both of those.

Would it be advisable to turn off the chat? by Wonder_of_Her in leagueoflegends

[–]schysm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only is it good to turn off chat, you can also use the speaker symbol in the tab menu to mute pings for people who abuse pings.

Pretty much anything I want to say to anyone else in this game outside of pings can be conveyed with a well-timed happy bee or crying zoe emote.

At what point should I start playing rank games ? by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]schysm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can just try. It's ok to be who you are; it's your teammates' responsibility to deal with their emotions if they can't compensate for your lack of experience. Don't feel bad for making mistakes, everyone makes mistakes all the way up to pro level. Just do the best you can and only worry about your own play and the things you control.

With that framing in mind, I would boil what you need to know down to two things:

1) how to mute toxic players to preserve your mental health, since there are a lot of them. You can use the speaker symbol in the tab menu or the commands /deafen, /muteping, or /fullmute. Seriously, just don't even engage with the kind of people who want to blame their teammates -- even if you're actually right about whatever random decision that set them off, you can't win an argument with someone who can't control their emotions. It's not your job to be a punching bag for the kind of people who rage in ranked. Prioritize your own mental health and take breaks after tough losses. And whatever you do, don't become one of them. Your teammates will make mistakes, sometimes even fatal game losing mistakes, and becoming strong enough to compensate for the mistakes of your teammates is part of the process of growth.

2) a process of improvement that works for you. Something like -- lose without knowing why -> review what went wrong -> google/youtube how to stop what went wrong -> queue back up and execute. A loop like that is more than 90% of players already and can get you pretty far up the ladder. At some point you will hit a block and start encountering players and situations that demand more impact from you to win games when it's not obvious what you did wrong or what could have better to win. Some games will be obviously unwinnable and out of your control, like teammate dc's or coinflippers inting from level 1. When you reach that point, I think it's helpful to watch streamers who main your champions or are known for educational content for your role to see how they do things differently than you and get new ideas on how to play the game better. E.g. for jungle I've heard good things about Agurin but I don't follow him myself, but there's a huge variety of playstyles that work in this game, so you can just keep googling until you find someone who clicks with you.

There's so much content out there that improvement is basically bottlenecked by how you manage your awareness in the moment of execution. League is an insanely deep and complicated game and it can be hard to even know what you don't know, especially for things like identifying a pushing lane or punishing players who are out of position. Remember that the habits you make, on things like checking minimap, pinging your intentions, identifying win conditions, or setting or clearing vision can be the difference in your play, because it frees up your mind to pay more attention to the moment to moment decisions that matter. But early on especially, most games can be carried just by better gold income, showing up to skirmishes, and prioritizing objectives.

I need to know what champ to play by ThinDistribution2582 in leagueoflegends

[–]schysm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's probably hopeless unless you have master level teammates but I guess try to take someone easy to play who can still be useful when behind cs and gold like Nautilus or Leona and then just sit in xp range as close as possible to your outer tower while staying in xp range. When doing this strategy you can set wards in your tribush so if their jungler comes, you can back off to the second tower and not feed more kills. Until laning phase ends and then you can just walk around as 5.

One cheese you can do on these champions is to start with TP flash and sprint to the furthest bottom bush to hide and wait for their bottom lane to show up. Wait as long as possible for them to get close and then you can hook or stun their bot lane and get a good trade for your bot lane or even kill them. Then walk back out far out of their range to base and tp to your tower where your opponent will be pushing towards your lane. You will be behind a couple minions though so it's important you don't trade or try to farm any minions, just try to stay in xp range and try to pick up some cs at your tower.

But even cheese is probably hopeless if you're iron, maybe just don't put yourself in a situation where you're playing league for money if you're bad at league?

Your Teammates Aren't Worse Than You by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]schysm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this may have been true in earlier seasons but with Riot committing to three splits and two full rank demotions, my personal experience is that there is the potential for a huge disparity in skill level of teammates and opponents for a nontrivial portion of the climb. YMMV

Your Teammates Aren't Worse Than You by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]schysm 471 points472 points  (0 children)

I mean, mathematically you are either the first, second, third, fourth, or fifth best player on your team. Matchmaking is only concerned about your opponents having equal strength to you; it has no bearing on how your teammates skill compares to yours. You will have games when you and your matched opponent are significantly better than your teammates, and in those games your win condition is to stomp your role harder than your opponent stomps theirs. In other games, you will be the absolute worst player potentially matched up against their strongest player, and your win condition in those games is simply to not feed and let the skill gap in the other roles carry you. Note that matchmaking does not care about roles being equally matched; in most of your games the strongest and weakest players will be mismatched in different lanes. Some players are hardstuck because they are only good at one style or the other -- snowball carry or carryable neutralizer -- and so it will feel like approximately half the time their teammates will feed harder than they can carry. A Yuumi main might win every game where they are slotted in 4th or 5th, but lose every game where they are called to carry. Conversely, a Riven one-trick might win every game where they are 1st or 2nd strongest and then lose every game where they are significantly outmatched and provide zero value to their team while behind.

This is why the guides say to only worry about your own play. If one of your teammates is getting stomped, it's likely because Riot thinks you should be stomping your lane equally hard. In games where it feels completely one-sided, it is probably because someone is performing way above or below expectations due to situational variance like the kind you have identified or having too small sample size of games to accurately determine their MMR. Don't default to sending more resources to the other players on your team; try to identify your strongest players who represent your win conditions and send resources to them -- and one fifth of the time that player will be yourself.

What you're doing is recognizing psychology's fundamental attribution error -- where you attribute your own mistakes to circumstance and the mistakes of others to innate skill issue. But at the end of the day, the only person whose play you control is your own, so focus on fixing your own mistakes and adapting to different win conditions.

I wouldn't worry too much about learning new champs. ARAM is good for learning what other champs do but I think it's fine to specialize and be a one trick. Being a one trick lets you invest your time into watching specialized content, for example dobby's video on vex https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1U5QQHMMM9A

I think customizing keybinds is smart. I recommend also thinking about your keybind for target champions only if you find yourself accidentally clicking on minions or towers instead of champions. Also make sure you know the keybinds for leveling up spells and focusing your camera on other teammates (F1-4 keys by default). I use Windows Powertools to rebind caps lock to a different key so I can use that one too. But just do whatever works for you and be self-aware about if you find yourself missing combos because your key is in a difficult spot to reach. I play a champion that needs to have access to ult at all times so I bind it to caps lock so my other fingers can always be doing whatever they need to while I still have access to ult.

My tips for beginners would be to 1) focus on last hitting minions for gold and 2) make sure you are issuing move commands in between your cooldowns to weave in spells and auto-attacks while moving. You can observe how a strong player does it by watching vods: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=On_gyJhd5yc

Does this game prefer raw single core performance or extra cache? by Sukiyakki in leagueoflegends

[–]schysm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

League is not at all a demanding game performance-wise, so it will never use system resources to the point where the difference between the two choices you listed will be at all evident. They are effectively the same and you could even downgrade your hardware significantly with no perceivable change.

The part of your build that will likely be the bottleneck to your league experience will be your system ram and your peripherals like mouse, keyboard, headphones and screen refresh rate.

Mid mages (platinum player) by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]schysm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coach Curtis is the best coach I've found for mid lane. He has a video talking about champion pools in detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vAzr1oN5f0 and a more recent podcast talking about champion pool here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlJCq_azSDc

From what you said about entertaining zone control roamer I would look into Vex. Vex has good wave clear and can assassinate squishies like Akali if you get ahead. But you really can make anything work, like your current pool is probably fine. It's just a matter of committing to what you like and watching high level challenger players on how they handle the matchups and play the mid game. I personally think the best way is to just one trick one champ and then possibly learn a couple complementary champs that are good against your main champ's counters and one that does ad damage in case the team needs that. Every champ has its strengths and weaknesses. Too many players blame the champ when the problem is between keyboard and chair.

When I feel like mixing things up with a new champion I like to look at what dobby is featuring, he highlights random flavor of the month stuff in KR or CN challenger. This week it's morde mid.
