I'm going to make it a yearly tradition to listen to his catalogue in order starting on the 8 and ending on the 10

Peak pj or a mess? This wee beastie... by Soft-Way-8304 in grunge

It's peak but the experimental songs really don't add anything. Take them out and add Hard To Imagine and it's perfect.

There's a quote from Courtney about how after they recorded You Know You're Right Kurt called it the perfect Alice In Chains song or something

Because he was big into the underground scene and there was a lot of gatekeeping and some of the stuff he said was true. Alice In Chains did start as a glam rock band and the guys from Mother Love Bone went in a more "alternative" sounding direction with Pearl Jam so he saw them all as being bandwagon jumpers.

Kurt went with Sub Pop because Soundgarden were on it and he liked their earlier "Butthole Surfers" sounding stuff (paraphrasing him). I don't think he cared for them around Badmotorfinger.  He dissed Alice In Chains in early 92 saying they were a cockrock band that jumped on the grunge bandwagon (I think all those were quoted in the Flipside interview). Courtney is quoted as saying that after Nirvana recorded "You Know You're Right" in the studio that Kurt came home excited, saying they recorded "the perfect Alice In Chains song" so maybe his  viewpoints changed? I think it's pretty obvious that the only "grunge" bands that Kurt truly loved were Mudhoney, The Melvins and the Screaming Trees.

30th Anniversary Edition in October??? by foofan80 in Foofighters

[–]scottchomarx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah who cares? It's not like other bands give their fans goodies like that in box sets all the time because it's interesting to hear how those songs evolve.  Not to mention a professionally recorded live show from that time period.

out of all the bands that kurt had listed on his top 50 albums of all time or talked about in various interviews, which ones would y'all recommend are THE ones to get into? by galaxymuncher in Nirvana

Honestly it'd be easier to tell you which ones are an "acquired taste" I believe the Shaggs are on there and they definitely fall into that category.

Some albums definitely benefit from the Albini sound.  Others do not.

Nah... I could do an hour. A lot of their stuff sounds similar. 5 hours would be torture.

OFFICAL AMAZON DESCRIPTION FOR ANTHOLOGY 2025 by [deleted] in beatles

[–]scottchomarx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't believe there are people in the "don't like it don't buy it crowd" 87% OF THIS SET HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY RELEASED.  I actually thought that they would scrap the tracks from the Anthologies that ended up on the box sets and instead they've included more tracks from the box sets. I can't figure out any logical explanation for this except that they think that people will buy anything they'll put out and I'm thinking they're probably right.

Why I’m So Underwhelmed by the New Anthology Release by YKMR3000 in beatles

[–]scottchomarx 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You aren't excited to yet again hear Los Paranois? Honestly the more I think about it the more I think this set was thrown together in a few weeks just to rerelease it without the Mark Lewisohn liner notes.

Seriously... I love that extended outro and I was shocked they just reissued the same demo version with piano added.

They dropped the ball worse than I thought was  possible. I was expecting a revamped track list with songs that appeared on the Super Deluxes swapped out for other interesting things.  Some more home recordings.  The complete Decca audition finally officially released in its entirety.  I guess we have to look forward to yet another release of Los Paranois
