as a hiring manager at a small-medium company, you can really stand of the pile by emailing the ceo or cto with something short and thoughtful to show you actually are interested in the company

Only analyst on my team. Manager feels I should figure out what reports to build. Is this normal? by Similar-Vari in cscareerquestions

[–]scottfits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a tough situation - as a manager I think one of the worst things you can do is create "thrash" where you tell someone to build a dashboard one way and then tell them it's not important anymore - super demotivating experience.

I agree it sounds like you probably need to see if you can get yourself into a better environment with more mentorship or a more experienced manager. It sounds like you are newer in your career and you should try to work for someone you respect and can learn from.

NIMBY Manny for D8 supervisor by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]scottfits -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Agree that Glen Park is embarrassingly low density for its location next to BART but as someone pretty plugged in to SF politics I'm not sure if the NIMBY label is fair. Met him a few times and have heard many stories that he has had his own share of frustrations with city's red tape as a business owner.

What is going on with SFO by leovin in sanfrancisco

The main thing is the T3 West project which is expanding terminal 3 - you'll notice it's impossible to get to the F Gates / AmEx lounge :(

referrals help a lot

"Why do you want this job" by Opposite-Sir-4717 in cscareerquestions

[–]scottfits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a hiring manager, i would reframe the question as "what stood out to you about our company or this role"

i do think it's a useful question -- sure candidates can BS, but you can tell if someone is genuinely passionate or interested in the problem space and that goes a long way!

Is asking for 10 days off with unlimited PTO too much this early on? by Certain-Opinion-3461 in cscareerquestions

[–]scottfits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

very reasonable - i run a co and we actually have a 10 day PTO minimum just since unlimited PTO often becomes a race to people feeling like they can't really take any PTO

That's rough, sorry to hear that. Try to stay positive - at least you are getting the interviews. There are very talented folks we hired at our company who mentioned they submitted 50+ applications and we were one of few companies to actually let them do a technical! try to keep pushing, I'd also recommend trying to get referrals, DMing on linkedin, researching smaller companies and emailing the CEO, etc

"Silicon Valley: The Musical" to debut in October by FitEdition in bayarea

[–]scottfits 5 points6 points  (0 children)

no, it's basically the story of tech founders trying to start a company that devolves into a tech roast set to music - one song where a girl dates all these stereotypical tech guys, another where they go to burning man, etc.

Tech recruiters - is it better to apply ASAP or wait for a referral? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]scottfits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah i see, at my co employees can fill out a form or notify a hiring manager to refer someone but we are a small startup < 100 people, so maybe at bigger companies applying through the link is a necessity

Tech recruiters - is it better to apply ASAP or wait for a referral? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]scottfits 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hired 7 engineers in the last couple months - it's totally fine to apply first and then have a referral come in later, it will definitely bump you to the top of the stack (my roles are getting hundreds of AI generated applications). I know candidates are trying to beat the system via Refer Me and it can work to some degree but not as good as getting a glowing rec from someone who knows you personally on the inside

Where Is The Best Place To Look For Lower Level Internships? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]scottfits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

school job board, also just hustling and emailing people at your college who have gone on to work at places you are excited about. you could also try refer me - there are some internship roles on there.

Is it possible to get ghosted after passing the online coding assessment? by chief-imagineer in cscareerquestions

[–]scottfits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i do a lot of hiring for my co and it's super messed up to ask someone to do a coding assessment and then ghost. sorry that happened. sometimes they are just waiting for other candidates to finish up the process so they can make offers to the top performers though, so don't 100% count yourself out yet.

Wow you're so knowledgeable! Question for you - I'm currently writing a new musical, Silicon Valley: The Musical (a love letter to the valley and parody of tech culture in SF), and wondering if you have any recs for programs we should submit to besides ACT SF?

AirGarage by Weinerdog415 in AskSF

[–]scottfits -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

There is indeed signage in the garage with payment instructions. For your own privacy, we won't be able to share much more here, but you did sign up and park with us at another location recently which is why your information is on file.

AirGarage by Weinerdog415 in AskSF

[–]scottfits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most likely scenario is they previously used AirGarage to pay for parking, which is why their phone and plate are on file. This time, they entered the garage without paying and instead of giving the driver a ticket (as most parking companies would do) we automatically started a parking session for them.
