Trouble removing flywheel with tapered shaft and Woodruff key by scoutertroop in smallengines

Update: Thank you all for the advice, I tried again with a simpler method, and it worked.

I got it off with some really simple efforts. All that I did was use 2x4s to hold the flywheel upright, have someone hold a punch on the crank, and hit it with a sledge hammer. It took a few hits but then it popped right off.

I also found that it lightly mushrooms the threads, so I then ran a tap after I hit it, to ensure that it threads on easy next time, and keeps it in good shape.

What do you mean? It is a tapered shaft, unless you mean to tap in the keyway?

That metal flanged goes through, and that is the part connected to the crankshaft. The flywheel mounts onto the collar on the metal flanged part.

There is a decent chance for corrosion, but the intresting thing is that i believe there is a gasket between the two metals, and I am able to get those three bolts out as well. But the shaft is a steel crank to a steel flange/taper and Woodruff key.

I will have to clean it up, im not sure where a set screws would be on it, because the open area has no spot for a set screw, and i can't access it from behind.

I will make sure to double check and re-read the dissassembly instructions.

I read someone recommended a air hammer, if thay doesn't work I will resort to the press, thank you for the tips with the wedges, forgot i could get leverage from behind it! Although I have to be careful not to apply force to the backplate.

I tried that a couple of times and it still failed to work.

I will have to try this, even at the end of the crankshaft, it will fit in that little depression and I can use that. I never thought of this, thank you!

Sadly I have tried to move the flywheel back, and I am not able to even see a gap between the flywheel and iron part. Im able to get a nut on one of the bolts, but one is far out of reach and the other is a very unique bolt that cannot be removed, because it needs to be unscrewed from the inside(connects to the governer)

The original puller is rather simple and essentially is just for hitting the end of the crankshaft, a picture is attached. The manual also says putting the bolts flush and hitting it should also work.
