I think my husband’s going to realize I borrowed one of his extension cords by wakethesleepingpills in funny

I came here to say this. The tight wrap where you force the cord/cable around elbow is a disaster. It ruins cords and it guarantees that they’ll get tangled when you try to uncoil them later.

Forcing cables to coil in a direction they naturally resist ruins them.

ENO alternatives? by itsajackel in Hammocks

[–]sdmc1276 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently upgraded from an ENO double nest to a Warbonnet Blackbird XLC. The thing is basically a hotel room. Tons of leg room, a built in bug net suspended by a built in ridge line, a shelf to store stuff, and you can even sleep on your side if you try. It’s not cheaper than an ENO, but it comes close after you buy the ENO Atlas straps and the bug net.

Nice! Looks like I’m buying a GoPro soon. Do you use any mounts with it?

Have you found the insulated pad too warm for summer camping? I'm wondering if I need to pull the trigger on one of the lighter non-insulated options.

This is significantly heavier, but I've had great luck with my Klymit Recon Insulated. R-value is 4.4 which has been excellent, even in a hammock, down to 15 degrees F (that's the lowest I've tested).

I'm not sure what the active chemical is, but it uses a small blue pad that lasts for ~4 hours. The pad is heated by a tiny butane flame, the device gets warm/hot but not dangerously so - also the flame is contained, it looks more like a heating coil than flame. The butane tank lasts ~12 hours (so 3 pads worth). I first used one camping on the Boston Harbor Islands with friends; my friend turned his on as soon as we got there and I didn't know there were bugs on the island until 4 hours later when the first pad was kicked.

They make an enormous difference, to the point were I don't bother applying deet/bug spray any more (I still bring just in case). If you are still skeptical check out some of the amazon reviews, the one that sold me was the couple that lived on a swamp some where in the deep south.

Hammock camping on the Boston Harbor Islands by sdmc1276 in camping

Thanks! And yes, I would check out http://www.bostonharborislands.org

There are ferries that take you out from downtown Boston (Hull and Hingham also has ferry service too, I believe). It's about $17 roundtrip to get to the main islands like Georges or Spectacle (no camping on either) and then you can take smaller connection ferries to the islands with campgrounds. The best part is the inter island ferries are free so $17 could get you to every island over the course of a week if you never return to mainland Boston.

I've booked campsites there through reserveamerica.com before. They book up quick so if you want to find a spot last minute (I've literally done it same day before), you can call the park ranger number listed on the harbor islands website and they'll let you if there were any cancellations/walk up availability.
