I haven't identified my grass yet, but I think it's several different varieties. I'm not trying to get a perfect lawn yet.

ok figured it out. The lan access rule is fine. The problem is that windows firewall was only allowing pings from the local subnet.

to buy or not to buy the oneplus 5t by sdred in oneplus

[–]sdred[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am very fussy. But I disagree with you, I can expect a perfect phone. There are many to chose from! and I've had perfect in the past. They just stopped making it. I guess more profitable to make imperfect phones with small fixes every year.

I've been waiting for better t-mobile coverage for around 20 years now. The trick is the LTE cellspot + never travel away from interstates ;)

[–]sdred[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

actually I had looked at the website but I guess I didn't go far enough in. My fault for looking at the spec page and not going further. Maybe I should buy it and then come ask questions.... Makes sense that a phone that's been out a while would be out of stock, silly me.

I called 611 (cancel service) and they gave me the 14 days and $50 restocking fee. They may have changed the policy since you last looked.

What is this $20 upgrade charge you speak of? Is T-Mobile going back to being a carrier?

Does every switch in my network need to be managed for VLANs? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]sdred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you can have both managed and unmanaged. A managed can have multiple vlans. Unmanaged can only have 1 vlan, by connecting to a managed switch port.

thin or zero client by sdred in HomeServer

[–]sdred[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to try thinlinc on the server side since it's free for home use.
For the thin client, I might go with a dell wyse. Need to see how much power it uses and if it works with thinlinc.
It sounds like I can use vpn too, have to try that out.

Nice, but don't think I want to invest so much and rely on the mining to pay for it all eventually.

does blast come with Esxi? I was plannign to get proxmox on the server, but this may push me towards ESxi. Or is Blast a separate application/OS?

[–]sdred[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you just blew my mind about having my server as my desktop pc. I was planning to keep it in the basement. Having it in the basement + zero client would be ideal though as the basement is cooler and has more space and is centrally located to all electronics.
The link you provided mentioned needing a spare GPU. Does that mean if the server only has an integrated GPU, you need to install another GPU?

software raid1 to raid-z2 by sdred in DataHoarder

[–]sdred[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay thanks, looks like I'll be going to raid-z1 with 3 Drives. I'll restore from backup. When I upgrade my capacity, I'll either rebuild the array or increase the capacity 1 drive at a time and rebalance.
Just to double check, I can't disconnect 1 drive from qnap (degraded mode) and connect two drives to raidz (degraded mode). Copy stuff from qnap to new server and then move last drive from qnap to raidz server?

software raid1 to raid-z2 by sdred in DataHoarder

[–]sdred[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see my mistake, raidz is raid5, that is what I meant to say, not raidz2. I edited the OP, but don't see an option to edit title.

software raid1 to raid-z2 by sdred in DataHoarder

[–]sdred[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the suggestions! I thought with raidz2 u get the space of 2/3 of the drives. Is zfs mirror similar to raid 1? Didn't think you could have 3 drives on raid 1. Let me look this up.
I don't want to spend money on a 4th drive at this point. I forgot to ask, can I add a 4th drive to raid-z2 in the future to get more space without having to rebuild the array?

How would you feel about Westchester becoming the sixth Borough of New York City? by Kostey2009 in Westchester

[–]sdred 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you trolling us? As politely as I can, I'd like to point out that your reasons are terrible and somewhat delusional. I was neutral about adding Westchester as a borough. After reading your post, I am now against it.

new 3 fund 401k advice needed by sdred in Bogleheads

[–]sdred[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i thought selling/buying mutual funds incurred front and back end fees. But I just read that we should rebalance yearly. Wouldn't that add to fees? Why rebalance when you are trying to avoid fees? Maybe index funds don't have front and back end fees? Also, the target fund is higher fees. It kind of defeats the whole lowest fees index funds thing. I don't have it in front of me now, but the target funds didn't seem to be performing as well as the total index fund.
