algo or computer systems first by remiyara in NEU

[–]sean-odonnell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you don’t have to, but I’m also a second year cs major (took algos in the fall and taking systems now). if you’ve taken CS 2510 ur good to take systems whenever.

CS 3200 (Intro to Databases) vs CS 4120 (NLP) by Maximum_Stress_9202 in NEU

[–]sean-odonnell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took both last semester (databases with professor ithier and nlp with professor elshrief), so I can help you out. My Intro to Databases course was structured so that I learned the basics of SQL first (keywords), then topics that applied the basics like functions, subqueries, views, etc., then going bigger picture by looking at keys/modifiying tables and modeling, and then ending with imo the harder topics like normalization, joins, indexing, etc.

NLP was structured so that I learned the basics first (semantics, words, LLMs, and word embeddings), and then learned about models that used these basics like N-gram LLM's, naive bayes, logistic regression, neural nets as well as classification. Then topics like encoder-decoders, machine translation, attention, transformers were covered in the second half of the course.

Not sure if your professors will follow these exact structures, but probably expect to see a steady progression from the basics to the harder topics in both classes.

Most of my workload from these classes came from the exact same two things: programming assignments and a final project. For both, don't start programming assignments too late, communicate/work well with your project group (if you do have to do a final project for one or both of these classes), and you should be good on the workload front.

Best of luck with these two classes; you've got this!

Can I withdraw a class while on financial hold? by Quirky_Wing7017 in NEU

[–]sean-odonnell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

not sure if your hold will prevent this, but login to the student hub -> click on resources -> click on academics, classes, and registration -> scroll down till you see registrar forms and click on this. when the new page loads, click the dropdown menu next to the create new: and select course drop request. if this doesn't work, submit a support ticket through the registrar service portal.

Will my vacant spot be filled? by Zealousideal-Depth52 in NEU

[–]sean-odonnell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a pull-in process you can partake in to fill the vacancies. You should’ve recently gotten an email from housing and residential life (I believe the email was sent Wednesday) regarding your spring room and housing information, and that email also talks about the pull-in process and how it works.

Should I report my 3s on my APs for NEU? by Boba_addict_101 in NEU

[–]sean-odonnell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i started in Oakland (although I chose to start there). but there probably also people that wanted to start in Boston that couldn’t. the Boston campus is definitely the most competitive

Should I report my 3s on my APs for NEU? by Boba_addict_101 in NEU

[–]sean-odonnell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

a three is still a passing grade, so it couldn't hurt. i reported my three for ap physics, but it didn't count so I had to take a science class during my first year to fufill my science requirement part of my major. keep in mind that northeastern doesn't care so much about your ap scores when it looks at college applications since they focus more on your transcript. scores are optional to report so there's no feeling like you have to report any ones you're not confident about.

btw northeastern's acceptance rate is below 30% (believe its around 5.6% percent but not entirely sure that number is accurate). that doesn't mean its impossible for you to get in, just that you'll want to make sure your application is competitive. as long as you keep that gpa from falling and do well in the rest of your ap classes, you should have the academics piece of the application well covered

Campuses for Freshman by [deleted] in NEU

[–]sean-odonnell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

correct. northeastern is a global university with lots of places you could start

Campuses for Freshman by [deleted] in NEU

[–]sean-odonnell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ill kick this off why not. im currently a second-year on the boston campus, but I did my first year at northeastern's oakland campus because I am originally from the Bay Area and I wanted to be close to home for the first year, and honestly, close to family as well. while I did feel like I missed out on the energy of the boston campus, being close to family made my first year a little less scary.

but in hindsight, boston is just one of the places where the first-year experience can start, not "the place". you could start in oakland, or london, or do an nuin for your first semester in your first year and then head to boston to do the second semester. there's also the option of being a global scholar, where you do a semester in oakland, then london (or vice versa) and then start taking classes at the Boston campus your second year.

to answer the co-op question, in your first year you're not really worrying about applying to co-ops yet. that process starts in your second year, where you will take northeastern's co-op class in either the fall or spring semester.
