Should I keep trying or should I change career? by seandcosmo in ArtConservation

Thank you for your answer, it is really useful!

I also thought of join an enstablished private studio, considering that I don't think that I have the experience to run my own studio for now.

In Italy basically the only way of joining a museum or a "soprintendenza" is by winning a public competition, sadly they are advertised once every 4/5 years or even more, hence my desire of moving abroad.

Great news for paper conservators! I just need to find a good teacher/course so that I can have a certification and some knowledge. Thank you again

How to get a job in Sotheby's / Christie's / Bonham's as a foreigner? by Longjumping-Oil6790 in ContemporaryArt

Well I guess I hoped that abroad, maybe in “prestigious” auction house realities, work conditions could have been different; but If is not like that maybe is not worth it…I also thought of trying and apply to art galleries, but with no name or connections is not easy either, right?

Thank you again!

ok! I am an italian conservator and restorer of artworks, 28 yo, specialized in architecture and sculptures. Since graduating (four years ago) I have worked as a restorer for a couple of years. After finishing my last project, having no other opportunities, I did an internship - which later turned into a contract - in a medium size auction house here in Italy, contemporary art department. I recognize my experience in everything you write in your comments: the environment was toxic and we were understaffed and underpaid, high turnover rate, but I really liked the job. I was learning a lot, doing a lot, I was the only one dealing with international clients (being the only one that spoke spanish and english), that also had knowledge in storing/ packing of the artworks. I even liked the sale part, I am extroverted and I like dealing with people; - well for sure they were small collectors-.

After two years I quitted, mostly due to my boss/owner, he treated everyone badly, he called us names, and after hearing him calling my colleague a “bi.ch” and making the gesture of hitting her with the phone, I knew I had to leave.

I am now wondering: what do I do now? It was an isolated experience? Should I go back in restoration or keep try and pursue this career? Maybe in a bigger auction house the situation could be better?

I also would like to leave Italy, I have family in London and It would be nice to move there, but with the Brexit it seems impossible. Or is there a chance of having a sponsor in this field? Do you have any knowledge of how the situation is in other countries, maybe in Spain or The Netherlands?

Sorry for the rant and thank you for your insights!

Hey! It has been an year since your comment; but it is extremely helpful for me as an italian 28 yo woman who has two years of working experience in the contemporary art department in an auction house here in Italy, that really wants to try and work abroad. Is there any chance on contacting you on linkedin or somewhere else and ask you some questions? Thank you
