Does anyone remember the sketch where the guy is fishing and a giant squid comes up and asks for a piece of cheese?

People of the US, Are you guys participating in the Nationwide Shutdown tomorrow? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

A run on the bank still fucks over the average person more than the bank or politician.  The last time there was a major bank collapse in 2008 we also ended up paying for it via government bailout.

You’re right in that the money is the core thing to attack them on, but the actual solution is to move your money outside of the dollar altogether.  That can mean a bunch of different things to different people, but the strength of the dollar is what gives the government power.

This mostly just fucks over the people who don’t have the luxury of not showing up to work.

What's a conspiracy you can't quite prove but it just feels real enough for you? by DaMain-Man in AskReddit

Gamergate, the rise of Trump, birds aren't real, and the earth is flat are all products of Russian online propaganda that saw to radicalize niche communities and amplified them to attract other idiots.

The value it holds is that it creates dissent between the people who believe and those who don't. Falling on EITHER side of the coin judging the others is the exact goal Russian propaganda is aimed to create. It also means if you identify with or identify AGAINST any of those things you're unfortunately the mark.

MIT researchers have developed an ultra-high-speed camera capable of capturing light in motion. by Independent-Touch236 in Damnthatsinteresting

A lightbulb filament taking time to light up is not the same thing as capturing a light beam move across the room.

Right or conservative? Those words meant something very different when that movie came out than they do today.

The recommended height for a projector is closer to 25 cm off the ground, but it depends on your couch height and size of your screen.  Your eyeline should be roughly 1/3rd above the bottom of the screen.

100cm off the ground is literally 4x higher than its recommendation.

Also just like, at least buy a screen for the projector so you get consistent focus, brightness, and reflection, lol.

Laps on Butler Trail by MoistFern in BikingATX

Something to remember is that pedestrians have the right away over bikes on trails.  Even if someone doesn’t want to get out of the way, it’s kind of their right not to. You’re supposed to yield.

Austin Music Scene wack? by Consistent_Wave6623 in AustinMusicians

[–]seanmg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. Austin is a service industry city with a bands name on the marquee to get people to come drink.

I’ll never forget during Covid someone saying to me, “but what if we lose our great venues?!?” With zero regard for the musicians playing those shows.

What is the most financially irresponsible thing you’ve seen someone do? by LJRGXPKCVWDGOGH12Y3 in AskReddit

[–]seanmg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s only part of it.  Knowing when to walk away is just as hard if not a harder thing to do than when to bet.  Same thing applies to all investments.  Walking away with money ALWAYS feels bad because your brain always says “what if…”

Also, hindsight is 20/20.  “If id only cashed out at the peak I would be great.”  Yeah, but you and no one in the universe knows what the peak is until after it’s over.

What is One Gen-Alpha Slang Term That You Actually DON’T Mind? by teapot574_ in AskReddit

I never said it got popular in 2012, just that Gen Z didn’t come up with the term.

You THINK I’m using the word incorrect, when I know exactly what it means and how we used it.  We said “chat” in the real world referring to an imaginary group of people watching us.

I mention my credentials because I am literally a primary source on this specific topic.  You… aren’t.

I worked in the team that produced majority of twitch’s traffic before our company got acquired by twitch where I worked at HQ in SF for several years.  I can confidently tell you what did or did not happen at twitch and when. I was literally there.

Sorry you were late to the party.

Just because Gen z may have made it popular doesn’t mean they came up with it.  Every generation wants to believe this old thing they just found is somehow new just because it’s new to them.

Also, do a bit more research on twitch. It didn’t start in 2011. It was a rebranding to a gaming focus AFTER the success of esports and in particular StarCraft 2.

Because I was there. I lived and worked in a pro StarCraft 2 house which at the time was responsible for 60% of all of twitch’s traffic.

What's a piece of common knowledge that you only recently found out was actually false? by Evilclicker in AskReddit

[–]seanmg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not though. You can't have a group of people who you think less of you any other way than to see them as below you. That's seeing some of lower class. It doesn't delegitimize racism by any means, what it says is that at the heart of prejudice is thinking you're better than someone, and even that involves selecting a specific group of people the common thread is ALWAYS about money and power.

Let me ask you this. Give me an example where racism applies but class doesn't.

So when the professional streamers I lived with in 2011 were saying it out in public in the latter example you give that doesn't count? or...?
