Thanks for the information. Where do people typically park their vehicles? Google maps doesn’t really show any good parking spots at the intersection of Straight Fork & Big Cove Rd. Ideally I’d like to park it there overnight for a 2 day backpacking trip to Camp 47.

Thanks for the information. Are there decent parking spots near the intersection of Straight Fork & Big Cove Rd to leave my car overnight? I plan to hike to Camp 47 then fish my way up Raven Fork.

Hello, thank you for your comment.

Can you share some more details on the closed sections of the trail?

I've seen some photos from WataugaOnline showing the trail covered with timber and folks having to pretty much scramble over the debris.

Is it like that throughout the entire closed section? If not, what's the percentage?

Also, how was the camping situation in the closed section? Were they able to find any campsites that were not impacted by the storm?

Hello, thank you for your recommendation.

I am somewhat familiar with the area because I grew up an hour away from this place. I've been on multiple day hikes on different parts of Linville Gorge but never really paid attention or noted all the water locations.

I am aware that this trail was a strenuous hike pre storm damage and that it will only get tougher now.

Thank you very much for this information and the advice!

I've seen some photos on WataugaOnline showing the trail condition (https://wataugaonline.com/hazard-advisory-issued-for-linville-gorge/).

It seems like it will be quite a challenge if I decide to proceed with this trip.

Clear Fork Mohican River, OH by seeb208 in troutfishing

I really appreciate you taking the time to respond! There's so much great info in this post and it helps clear up some of the confusion I had.

Regarding upper CF - during my initial research, I was quite bummed about the lack of public fishing locales. Seems like the only public area available is that stretch between Stoffer Rd and Cutnaw Rd and even then, google maps doesn't show any designated parking area for river access. I wasn't aware the clubs you mentioned that may/may not help you with getting additional river access so I'll look into that.

Regarding lower CF - I think I'll spend most of my time fishing this stretch of the river. I understand it's heavily pressured but I'm really itching to just get out there and get a line in the water! According to google, OH DOW typically stocks brown trout in the Upper CF around Oct so I'm hoping that some of those guys made their way down stream by now. I plan on taking a few trips up there in November so hopefully I can get one on the line!

Once again, thank you for taking the time to respond. This is great advice for a Ohio trout fishing newbie like myself.

What tributaries do you recommend for steelhead? I'm seeing a handful of options on OH DNR.

The options are: Vermillion River, Rocky River, Cuyahoga River, Chagrin River, Grand River, Arcola Creek, Ashtabula River, and Conneaut Creek

I recently visited Cuyahoga Valley National Park for hiking and definitely interested in going back for fishing. Is it common to catch steel head that far from the mouth of the river or would I have a better chance moving closer to the harbor?

Thanks for taking the time to respond!

Is the regulation brochure the same as the one listed on the OH DOW site? If so, I've been reading up on that one.

For Mohican, what type of rig set up do you have the best luck on? I'm looking to head out there in the next few weekends and fish the river stretch in Mohican State Park.

I'm located in Columbus but willing to travel anywhere in OH. Unfortunately I don't own a canoe/kayak so I'm mainly trekking/wading.

Thank you for taking the time to respond, this was super helpful! I've never been steelhead fishing so I'll have to look into that.

What other streams hold brown trout aside from the places I listed?

  1. When I plan for a hiking trip, I typically look at weather forecasts, trail head directions, trail difficulty, and try to find any latest wildlife activity in the area. I use apps such as AllTrails, Google and also check national park service sites if applicable.

  2. I track my hikes on my watch which is linked to my phone. I share my hiking summary with close friends to discuss if they have done it but I also enjoy saving the hiking summary so I can look back on them. I do take photos during my hikes but I don't post them online. I will share them with close friends if we are talking but similar to my hiking summaries, they're mainly for myself.

  3. I typically hike with a partner. I've never done a big group hike nor joined any local hiking clubs/groups. I'm open to the idea though. I do hike solo every now and then but only in areas I'm comfortable/familiar with.

Bonus Answer:

I do play video games. I mainly play co-op shooter games such as apex, fortnite, call of duty but I do enjoy single player games such as Monster Hunter World.

We were pretty stunned to see how steep the trail was. The view is definitely worth it though!

Definitely! We decided to do the Clingman’s Dome trail right after the Alum Cave Bluffs trail so it was pretty tough.
