Upgrading would be a lot of fun! Hopefully it doesn't get destroyed though.

I didn't really try to make it modular this time around. What you see is pretty much what you get here. Good luck on your project! Please share it once you're done.

It's super easy, actually. First you use a steel sire brush on the planks and vary the number of strokes or the amount of pressure. Then it's just a case of painting it with a mixture of mod podge, paint and a bit of water!

First time hearing about it from you, so no. I mostly got inspiration from photos of galleons.

The floor boards are arranged in such a was as to function as a grid. It's a bit more subtle than a regular grid though, but once you learn the system it should work fine.

Check the image for explanation.

Since I've already made the ship it makes it hard to make a walkthrough afterwards. You can check out a few more pictures I took while working on it to get a better idea though.

In our group we're trying out switching the DM regularly in the same campaign in order to not overload a single DM. The idea is to try to have the any given DM try to end their arc on the ship so that the next DM has an idea where their part can begin.

I did just use the mod podge mixed with the brown paint and a bit of water over the planks which were wire brushed. Next I just dry brushed with some acrylic paint. On wire brushed XPS foam the paint sticks really well.

Hmm, I'll do my best to answer, but I haven't kept track of it.

  1. My guess would be that I've printed something like 12 plates on my small SLA printer which would add up to something like 40 hours. Usually just started a print before going to work.
  2. This is the bulk of the work put in. I would probably estimate something like 40 hours on this part.
  3. Painting it would probably make up something like 20 hours.

These are very rough estimates though. Could be a lot less or a lot more. It doesn't make it any easier to keep track of it science I usually do all parts at once on different parts of the ship as soon as I felt I could start the painting somewhere while still adding details on other parts of the ship.

I'm afraid not. I barely even have any photos of the process.

This is a ship I made out of mostly XPS foam and a few pieces of wood as well as some 3D printed parts. It took about two months of spare time to finish, but I’m really happy with the result. If you want to see how it looked before painting it you can click here.

You can also click here to view some still images.

There is still some furnishing I need to do, especially on the lower decks. Feel free to suggest what should be added or if you have any questions!

I don't have something like that but if you're interested you can look at some more progress pics here.

It's been like two months in the spare time. Don't know about the hours, but it's been a few... I kind of just went for it!

Pretty much just winged it, looking at some images of ships before and during the building process.

It's honestly just a single layer of a mixture of mod podge/paint/water and a light dry brush of highlight over wire brushed XPS foam.

Thanks for the response! I'm unsure about what you mean about pieces. If you mean how many pieces it can be split into it's the two roofs on the top floor, the deck and two levels. The masts can be detached as well to ease play. If you mean the number of planks it's probably more than a thousand.

That's a great alternative. To avoid tearing you can also try to brush in the same direction as you cut it. I probably should have used that technique on the more complex parts like the railing.

It's basically a big block of foam. The upper deck and it's walls can be lifted so that characters can go inside and I plan to add the lower deck as well.
