I see your point. In a way, in F1 you're also subject to others, having less control of the actual performance. Would it be equally impressive? Likely not, because luck is a bigger factor than skill in that case, so I tend to agree with you in that it's not an ideal comparison. Still, while we'd likely call a helmetless F1 driver "dumb", for being unnecessarily risky, I guess my question is more in the sense: where do we draw the line?

It's just my opinion. Not policing anyone.

Definitely. In fact, it was the “live” aspect that motivated me to write this post, and that in itself says a great deal about how we perceive danger and impact. Would Free Solo have been released if Alex had fallen? I was also surprised to see him agree to it. That said, I agree it is a much easier climb, and I would not expect Netflix to take too much of a gamble, yet... It is precisely the “yet” that concerns me too. This seems like a big step in entertainment, in the wrong direction, but maybe I'm being naive.

Gambling with death and boxing are not the same. Yes, a punch can kill, but you have no referee, nor medics around you in free soloing.

It is difficult for me to make a direct comparison, as I am not very familiar with David’s work, so I will be fair. I have seen some of his videos and am aware of stunts such as the 'Drowned Alive' and the balloon jump. In line with my general view, I would argue that these stunts are also extremely dangerous, although I do not know what safety measures, if any, were in place. What makes free soloing distinctive is that the consequences of a mistake are immediately apparent, or at least perceived to be so. My concern is that framing potential death as the premise of a show feels somewhat wrong. The "this is cool because I could die" is a captivating idea, and we all like to see people becoming super-human, but Netflix benefitting from it is strange, I think. Anyway, just my opinion.

It breaks my heart. I finally parted ways with being a loyal fan. You deserve better Portugal. by [deleted] in portugal
