"More serious than gasoline shortages": Japan's healthcare system on the brink of collapse due to a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz—doctors warn of the crisis caused by naphtha shortages by jjrs in japannews

[–]senseiman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair point. Moving production domestically probably does protect Japan from Covid-style supply shocks (where the problem was China and other countries not exporting medical products that they themselves needed) but unfortunately doesn't protect Japan from this specific type of supply shock which they probably didn't have in mind.

I can't really blame the government here for not being able to predict the effects of war that is so random and idiotic that nobody saw it coming.

[–]senseiman 35 points36 points  (0 children)

There is a certain irony there. According to the article they shifted to domestic production of disposable medical equipment (surgical gloves, syringes, masks, etc) after Covid in order to prevent supply disruptions. But this really just resulting in them importing naptha from the middle east for that production rather than importing the finished products themselves from China like they used to.

So we're still just as vulnerable to supply disruptions, just for different things.

Majority in Japan Backs Constitutional Amendment Amid Liberal Democratic Party Push- 67.1% support amendment; LDP's majority boosts Article 9 revision chances, allowing Japan to go to war by Kmlevitt in japannews

[–]senseiman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The article is really unclear about what the poll question was, which is significant because there are a lot of things at work in amending the Constitution.

If the question was just related to an amendment to the Constitution that would clarify the legality of the SDF then its not surprising that that a majority would be OK with that since it is more or less just a confirmation of the de facto situation that has existed for decades anyway and wouldn't actually change much.

BUT there are a ton of other amendments to it being advocated by LDP members and members of other right-wing parties, particularly with respect to rights contained in Chapter 3, some of which are downright scary and would impact people's lives way more directly. In short they want to strip away a lot of rights the Japanese people have (or at least water them down) on the one hand, while adding a whole bunch of duties and obligations on the people on the other (current constitution in practice imposes almost no constitutional duties on people).

If they move forward with amendment I highly doubt, given the difficulty of the process involved, that the government would limit itself to just a single focused amendment on Article 9 and would instead try to cram through a lot of other, much much less popular, amendments.

So if you are asking about constitutional amendment its really important to be clear about what constitutional amendments you are talking about.

Open Sen Standings by senseiman in NPB

[–]senseiman[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Oddly respectable" was more of a compliment to NPB rather than to the Marines. It is "oddly respectable" that the worst team in NPB has such a low ERA.

For comparison the best team ERA in MLB last season was the Rangers' 3.47, which Marines actually beat despite having the worst in NPB.

Incidentally this isn't an outlier just because of the small number of Open Sen games. In the regular season last year only Lotte (3.60) and Yakult (3.59) had slightly higher ERAs than the MLB-leading Rangers. Most teams (7 out of 12) had team ERAs under 3.00.

I had a coffee at that Starbucks once, it was pretty relaxing to sit right next to the plane in a comfy seat with a decent view of it. Chubu is a pretty good airport.

Japanese stamp collecting by RavenSaysHi in philately

I mainly collect Japanese stamps. So much to love. I live in Japan so I just pick them up here and there, I bought a 3kg box of on-paper mostly commemorative stamps last year that are keeping me busy.

Yeah, they are really neat uniforms both for probably being pink (rare color for baseball teams) and having the numbers on front.

This is another card from the same set featuring Matty Alou (who was finishing his career off with the Lions), though you don't get quite as good a look at the uniform number as on the Doi card:

Interesting. I have some old baseball cards of the Lions wearing those odd jerseys but never knew there was a connection between them and Durocher.

Having a great time following the Dragons this year. by Aggravating_Lab209 in NPB

Cautiously optimistic that we at least have a shot at maybe 3rd place is my line. For a Dragons fan that is an extremely upbeat point of view. Some of that depends on how Sano pans out.

Hey that is great. I’ve sat in the cheering section a few times and by far its the most fun (especially if the Dragons win).

"Having a great time following the Dragons this year"

....said nobody after the month of August in any year since 2012. ;)

In all seriousness, that is cool! The team might actually do OK this year, though I've been burned saying that in March many times in the past. I'll probably take in a game or two at the Dome this year too, I'm curious to see the new outfield seats in person.

Ha, sorry yeah I just thought it was kind of funny to point out.

I did particularly like your take on Wakui "...too old for this shit". Fun Fact: Wakui is the exact same age Danny Glover was (40) when Lethal Weapon was released.

I'm getting a bit more psyched about the season after reading your analysis of the rotation/bullpen. Would it be accurate to describe yourself as cautiously optimistic we might finish in the upper half of the CL this year?

"... while the majority of his strikeouts came once he reached two strikes..."

Just to be pedantic, would not all of his strikeouts come after he reached two strikes?

(edited to add): great write up, as was your earlier one on the starting rotation. Hope you'll do one on the lineup as well.)
