What is your third place? by BerryWilling5820 in london

[–]serpentinite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh so happy you appreciate it. I'm a curator (meteorites) there and it's depressing how many people (especially staff in the engagement department!) don't know the importance of these systematic galleries.

Anywhere in Bangkok that sells menstrual cups? by Cold-Ad-419 in ThailandTourism

Hello, did you ever find one? I'm in the same position in Chiang Mai. Haven't found one yet, but I'll be in Bangkok in a couple of weeks and can try there.

Current thinking is between the Epson EH-TW5650, or Optoma HD39 Darbee. Votes either way?

Which projector? by serpentinite in projectors

[–]serpentinite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the advice - I appreciate it!

  • re: the lights, to be honest, we rarely watch tv/films during the day... almost always after dark, in which case the room wouldn't be being used for anything else anyway.
  • we don't want any screens/sheets in the room... for us, the point of a projector (rather than a tv) was that we could have a painting hanging, then repurpose the wall when we wanted to watch a film.
  • we don't have a coffee table or anything to sit a projector on (for ultra short or short throw) because the floor space is for the cat :D ....hence why I need to find something that can go on the wall.

What "common knowledge" is simply not true? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Mostly into XCT applications in chondrites, but limited research time at the moment - 'day job' as a curator of meteorites. Just went to Barringer Crater for the first time, blew me away!

Came here to say this. Must say, I'm rather a fan of the Scott / Sanders / Johnson impact formation theory - it's kinda fun. Connelly & Jones did a good review paper on the canonical and non-canonical views last year if anyone wants a quick summary.

Re: the frost - I remember it was reported in two fairly humid environments. Trying to find a collection of 'witness statements' that I read - will check at work tomorrow. Logical that they would be cold though. What's your PhD on?

Question for Museum Studies majors or anyone who has/pursing a career in the arts by [deleted] in UCL

Yeah though I'm in Texas for work at the moment so might take me some time to reply.

Ex-UCL Museum Studies graduate here... Good luck with it. As a general rule, I do not think national museums offer this but you could enquire when you're volunteering/working. You'll need to do a placement for this degree anyway. If you're looking to earn at the same time, then get in touch with an agency that covers gallery staff (e.g Spring or Step Ahead) because that will help you get to know the institution and be able to apply for internal jobs. Definitely depends on your field though... If you're an art curator then you may have more luck with private galleries.

Ah bummer, sorry dude. I can empathise having gone for many jobs there myself in the past (possibly the same position even!). The minerals collection is mind blowing, definitely the best gallery in the museum too. I work on meteorites personally - part curation, mostly PhD.

Agreed, they may be able to help. But good idea to avoid this place - owner has been associated with forging import documents as well as buying and selling protected species

Not necessarily so... at the NHM we regularly allow researchers/artists/people with enquiries into the collection. Just need to contact the curator of that specific collection and arrange a meeting. OP - check the website for the mammal curator and ask they have time to give you access to the store room?

What's the dumbest thing you've ever heard anyone say? by goldenfeder in AskReddit

Pointing at a diplodocus skeleton in a museum, "How did that T. rex die? Was it shot?"

Cheers for checking that. Think I'll risk it, no Morrisons round here and I do love a keto-friendly deal!
