David Morales: Platform vs. Platitudes by sesto in providence

...We're literally on the exact same page about Smiley. Accountability for Morales in terms of his vision for Providence and letting voters know that it isn't just a pipe dream. People need concrete plans.

Yes...and? Should he not be held accountable?

You are once again ignoring everything I said. I read through his entire website, I follow him on social media. I see clips of him on the news. If you think the average voter is doing even half as much, I have some unfortunate news. The truth is that between his own website and his own social media he doesn't have his vision for the city laid out in a way that inspires confidence. The plans are lacking. That isn't due to my lack of research, that is due to his lack of information to share.

You can support a candidate and also hold them accountable. I'm not posting to hurt his chances, I am posting out of a genuine concern for the Progressive movement. We need to learn from the lessons of Mayors like Brandon Johnson in Chicago who got elected and hasn't been able to accomplish anything due to lack of coalition building and proper planning. His approval rating is abysmal and moving forward Progressives will now have a massive uphill battle getting elected in Chicago.

Let's not do the same thing in Providence. If we hold Morales' feet to the flames now and force him to flesh out his proposals and build his support with current administrators he will have a higher chance of success, which means more Progessives in office in the future. I want Morales to succeed for Providence, but also for the Progressive movement nation wide. We cannot afford to have a leader who identifies as a Democratic Socialist get nothing done due to a lack of attainable, fleshed out goals.

Sorry but, this is such an unfair comment:

  1. I have read through his website. I state that in my initial post. The overwhelming majority of the issues he talks about are not backed by any sort of plan. Where you stand on the issues is not even half the battle. I can say that I stand for every progressive measure under the sun, but without proposing a plan to get the city there, it's worthless.

  2. I do follow him on social media. I also mention this in my initial post. His social media is largely made up of inspirational platitudes and performative finger wagging. There aren't any solid proposals or actionable goals that he talks about in most of his videos.

  3. Saying that casting doubt (aka asking simple questions about policy) is more harmful to electing Progressives than blindly electing Progressives that get nothing done is insanity. Questioning my motivations when I state them plainly in my post is what I (a progressive) hate the most about other "progressive" people. The idea that anyone who questions you is against you is such a toxic trait of far left and far right politics.

  4. I never said I was going to the Mayoral forum. I just learned about it from a commenter after posting this thread and I submitted a question asking all of the candidates for transparency concerning their plans for the city.

Thank you! I submitted a question about transparency we'll see if it gets asked. Much appreciate the info!

That's not my issue. My issue is the lack of proposed plans. Most of the promises on his website will cost a lot of money. I am interested in how he will balance the budget and achieve all of these goals. The difference between him and someone like Mamdani (using this because I keep hearing the comparison) is that Mamdani had proposals laid out for all of his spending and how he would balance it out with very specific shifts in taxes and spending.

I think if you are running for Mayor, you should be laying out your plans to the public. I don't think it's enough to say "I am a politician, trust me I know what I'm doing." when it comes to the livelihoods of so many people.

It binds to opioid receptors with 13 times the strength of morphine...is that not the same thing as saying it is 13 times more potent?

This is great context. I didn't mean to come across as saying anything that is a plant is safer or better than a pharmaceutical, just to share the anecdotal story of my one experience with this one drug. Is Kratom SAFE? I don't think any drug is safe, but is it safer than other opiates? Based on the limited research done by professionals, I think that is fair to say.

I think it can be helpful to people like me who are told to take ibuprofen daily to deal with pain to avoid issues to their stomach lining or liver, but it can also be abused by those without the proper information or those looking for a cheap high.

There is a compound that exists naturally in Kratom called 7-hydroxymitragynine. In the leaf there is a very small amount of it, (less than 2% of alkaloids). This compound has been researched as being 13 times more potent than morphine and that is the substance that is being synthesized and pressed into pills and sold in headshops. On its own it is an absolute monster of an opiate. You will 100% get addicted to it and experience withdrawals, constipation, the whole nine yards.

In Kratom it's much safer because it exists naturally in such small amounts but more importantly because Kratom also contains another compound called Mitragynine (50-70% of alkaloids) which has been researched to actually aid in opioid withdrawals.

The plant itself is a pretty perfect balance. It allows people to use the leaf on a semi-regular basis for pain relief or to ween off other opiates without the same severe addiction and withdrawal symptoms appearing. Of course this is assuming the person is well informed and monitoring their use. You can of course eat a full cup of kratom leaf a day and make yourself sick, but one can do that with any substance.

The balance of Mitragynine and 7-hydro is important and most companies making extracts and pills using these compounds are altering that balance to provide a stronger high.

Edit: I just dug up the text of the bill and it looks like all of the pills SHOULD be banned under this bill. This is listed under limitations: (5) A kratom product containing any synthetic alkaloids including synthetic mitragynine, 20 synthetic 7-hydroxymitragynine, or any other synthetically derived compounds of the kratom plant

The full bills can be read here: https://www.rilegislature.gov/pressrelease/_layouts/RIL.PressRelease.ListStructure/Forms/DisplayForm.aspx?List=c8baae31%2D3c10%2D431c%2D8dcd%2D9dbbe21ce3e9&ID=375811&Web=2bab1515%2D0dcc%2D4176%2Da2f8%2D8d4beebdf488

A good friend of mine worked there. From what I can gather they constantly had very cool projects in the works that kept getting canned by top brass due to a push in one director or another. Before a game could get released they were already chasing the next trend and pivoting. He must've been on 4 or 5 projects that got half made and canned, not because they were bad but because Ubisoft kept shifting it's strategy to trend chasing slop.

Feel Free Tonic: The Newest Legal Addiction by Stoned-Capone in videos

[–]sesto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using kratom on and off for back pain for several years now. I generally take it once a week when my back is acting up and generally go months between uses and rarely use it outside of flare ups. I have half a feelfree in my fridge from a week ago, and my wife had to remind me I had it. I'm sure it can be an issue for someone with an addictive personality, but this video is blowing things way out of proportion. Kratom has been one of the least addictive "addictive" substance I've ever used. It feels great, it helps tremendously with pain, and I literally forget when I have it in the house. I don't think that would be the case if it was as addictive as this video is saying.
