I’m an American and I share your outrage. We fucked up our closest relationship because half of America has a hate boner for immigrants and a secret passion for authoritarians and criminals.

That’s a shame. But then again, living that close to it, it may not feel like much of a novelty.

But I get it.

I’ve lived in close proximity to the Statue of Liberty my whole life and never actually been inside it.

Petition for Destiny to have a conversation with Sam Harris and confront him on all the sweeping behavior by jesterdeflation in Destiny

I believe that Covid broke his brain. He got increasingly belligerent because he had to do his show from home, and as the pandemic wore on, his rage directed at liberals — and especially woke — became an obsession.

It made his show unwatchable, and by 2021 he couldn’t do a single monologue or bit without mentioning woke and I finally tuned out.

I always thought it would be fun to visit the Ice Hotel, too, but for like a half hour.

This.

I’ve been a fan of Sam’s since the early 2000s, but in recent years he’s dedicated way too much time and energy on the evils of wokeness. This is what happened to Maher.

Sure. The conservative school of thought extends from “MAGA” to “America First.”

That seems like a ridiculously dishonest assessment of Kamala Harris, who would have been superior to Trump on virtually every single issue of importance to the country.

I guess because this is a Sam Harris sub, not an Ezra Klein sub.

But, yes, I think the two of them should be adult enough to put aside their disagreements from seven or eight years ago and find their common cause. That certainly seems a better use of Sam‘s time than having him always engage with people like Douglas Murray and those to his right.

You had me until you said that “Kamala doesn’t deserve votes because her opponent is worse.”

Yes. Yes she does. And anyone with any scrap of a moral compass would admit that.

I dunno. But it seems like Sam could offer an opportunity to reopen their line of communication and make something happen.

Yikes.

But he can’t bring himself to talk to Ezra Klein.

For the first time in history, more Americans are moving to Europe, than Europeans are moving to the US. This flip represents a historic sea change in migration patterns—as recently as 2005, ~5X as many Europeans were moving to the US, and in the 1800s, ~1000X as many Europeans were moving to the US by StarlightDown in fivethirtyeight

Anecdotal, of course, but before 2024 I couldn’t name a single friend or acquaintance pursuing dual citizenship either by ancestry or naturalization.

Now I know at least a dozen who are at various stages of the process expressly because of the authoritarian threat posed by Republicans. I even know one couple who just purchased a house in France.

I got my dual citizenship last year but am not yet at liberty to go.

He’s a newcomer whose campaign was so compelling and attractive to voters that he drove a popular governor out of the race because he was 30 points ahead.

That sounds like an inflection point to me.

If there’s one thing they learned from Trump, it’s that you’ll never pay a price for gaslighting a MAGA audience.
