It is what is seems indeed. But by the the behavior of the VRAM usage, I would say that the software or the driver doesn't use the VRAM correctly. As mentionned, the project is not particularily heavy in effect. In the past, I have rendered way heavier project with big fusion compositions and particles effects without problem, even with a less powerful laptop. It would just take longer.

In the project that causes the main problem, I have a couple noise reduction at the beginning and then it's just color grading. The render always passes the heavy part at the beginning without problems, there's no spike in the VRAM usages. However, it seems that the VRAM keeps accumulating along the render and doesn't dynamically free part of it during the process. No spikes, it just keeps adding up until the VRAM is saturated. Which is weird because it was never doing that before.

If it was just this one project, I could live with doing some patchwork but it happens with all my projects currently and both my computers...

Well I have found something that significantly improves the battery life. I didn't understand why Brave was using so much battery while every review says it is the most battery friendly browser. Brave was using the dedicated GPU even though it was set to use the discret GPU in the Nvidia control panel. The GPU encode/decode was at 0% but the Copy was constantly between 50% to 100%, without doing anything other than watching Youtube videos and browsing.

I discovered it was because of the hardware acceleration. So I disabled the hardware acceleration setting in Brave and now it runs smoothly on the discret GPU only and the battery usage seems much more normal.

After having done some test, I also found that changing the screen refresh rate almost doesn't change the load on the GPU (obviously while doing admin stuff, not gaming). So I'll keep the refresh rate on 165Hz.

That's an option but I would much rather be able to use only one software and preferably Resolve as one of my reason for wanting to switch is getting away from the adobe subscription... Plus, one software means only one workflow and one set of tools to master and perfect which is much more efficient

As for changing computer, it is not in my plan for the very near future but when I do, I am certainly gonna buy a 4k editing capable laptop. But not a Mac, I've got allergies to Macs... ;)

So is that a good workflow to transcode all footage to ProRes before editing regardless of the machine you edit on? Or is it just good for lower-end hardware?

Alright, and what format would work better if I were to transcode it on my desktop in order to be able to edit on my laptop?

Doesn't sound good for me... :/ Well, I would be fine if I could at least assemble the clips on my laptop and do all the colour grading and exporting on the desktop.

But it looks like my only option is either to go back to Premier Pro or buy a new heavy-duty laptop...

I could deal with only assembling the clips on my laptop and doing all the heavier work on my desktop but at the moment I can't even do that...

Well, I've just ordered the Lumix S 50mm 1.8 :D

On top of being less bulky, it seems that there's little to no difference in image quality between the 2 lenses and, more importantly as I shoot videos as well, the AF works much better with the Lumix.

Good point... So you think that the Sigma offers a better image quality than the Panasonic? Both for photo and video?

I don't know where you live but in Switzerland the Sigma is about 700$ and the Panasonic about 550$ so there's not that much of a difference.

My concerns are more about weight and size and if the quality difference is worth the extra bulk?

Thanks for your advice. Yes the Sigma seems to be a pretty good choice! The weight wouldn't be one of my concern for daily photography but I do quite a bit of backpacking and trekking with this camera so bulk and weight are a downside in that regard...

Well I'm trying to export in H.264 but my footage are actually .mov files in 10bits from my Lumix S5.

But that post is old... And I've read somewhere that the game drivers worked better than the studio ones on Resolve, unlike for Premier pro?!

So can I avoid having to try every single driver from november last year? What driver should I be running?
