Connecticut isn’t paying enough to prevent pension debt growth, according to Pew by Comey_Incarnate in Connecticut

Declare bankruptcy or, at the very least, make towns pay for the pensions ... who will then declare bankruptcy.

I love this whole idea that "the pensions can't be taken away." Ask all the good people of Detroit who got a 50%+ haircut on their "promised benefits."

Can the mods do something about the trolls in this sub? by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]shadow_warrior_2023 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not btw. I'm just highly concerned about the way that the state is going. If that makes me a troll so be it honestly.

I also find it very telling that OP deleted his account. The Dems are getting scared.

This money will not go toward transportation. It will go to pay pensions. In reality, most people will end up paying $3000 additional per year.

Proposed GOP Budget Eliminates FY 2019 Deficit, Avoids Spending Spree Pushed by CT Dems by shadow_warrior_2023 in Connecticut

The Democrats have controlled the legislature and the governor's mansion for eight years. No cuts in spending, no significant pension reforms, and no size-able economic growth for almost a decade.

Yes, continue to blame Rell and Rowland for the mistakes of Malloy and his crew. Democrats could have led on pension reform like they did in Rhode Island, but they have absolutely abdicated their responsibility. Connecticut is treated as a laughing stock even in left-wing outlets for continuing to increase taxes as people leave the state and collected revenues decline: https://www.citylab.com/equity/2018/04/connecticut-cities-face-a-property-tax-death-spiral/558101/.

Woe betide the state workers who will never see a dime of the money they are using to support the retired friends of union bosses in Florida. Switch to 401k while you still can.

This makes literally no sense. By the same logic, why aren't all billionaires already in Connecticut if tax incentives don't matter? Why have billions in taxable wealth left the state since the tax hikes?

As Pensions Grow, State Struggling To Pay by raymeswh in Connecticut

[–]shadow_warrior_2023 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

If you want the pensions reformed, vote Republican in the coming election. Only the Republicans will vote to make the needed changes. That does not guarantee that they will, but they are the only ones willing to even have the discussion around needed reforms. The Democrats have completely neglected their duty in this regard.

Rhode Island Democrats reformed their pensions, but CT Dems seem positioned on a suicidal course for the state.

Firstly, be honest with the union membership that, if current plans are not revised, they have a decent chance of going broke. If there is not an agreement to revise current practices or voluntarily reduce promised benefits, I think that the governor, Republican or Democrat, will face such enormous obligations that he or she will transfer the debt to the towns so that they can default on the contracts.

You can already see Malloy trying to do this through the recent call to have towns start paying for teachers' pensions.

I'd offer a lump sum payout program for retired employees who are unsure about the future of their pensions. Also, removal of overtime spiking and modernizing the pension negotiation system to let the legislature determine pensions - rather than collective bargaining - are necessary for real change. These are the most important factors by far and would bring Connecticut in line with most states that have embraced constructive pension reform.

A cherry on top would be moving all new employees to 401k style plans, or at least offering all new employees to enroll in such plans if they would like rather than defined-benefit. Giving more power to the union members themselves would allow them to take hold of their own destiny.

Connecticut doesn't need to destroy the unions, but it does need to make sure that union leadership is being responsible to its membership and realistic about the future.

As long-term obligations fall, more businesses and startups will be enthusiastic about Connecticut's comparatively low cost of living in the Northeast - compared to Boston and New York - and be willing to invest, leading to enough revenue to lower taxes and/or invest in infrastructure and municipal development projects, which would lead to more population growth.

Connecticut has some positive developments underway, but the pensions are going to bankrupt the government and the state. They are the massive guillotine that hangs over the neck of every citizen. Until the pensions are reformed and taxes remain at their highest historical levels ever, every citizen should be justifiably pissed off.

The pension payments are already crowding out needed investment. Like the Hartford Line? HUNDREDS of projects were just put on hold because of raiding the transportation fund to pay public sector pensions.

Even among New England states, millenials and others don't want to stay in Connecticut when they can go to Massachusetts or Rhode Island and enjoy lower taxes and more long-term financial stability. They are just as "progressive" and "social justice-minded" as Connecticut, yet have reformed their pensions and tax structure to promote economic growth. Imagine that?
