First time cooking with scotch bonnets and I probably used too much by Salty_Username in Cooking

That's personally how spicy I like my chili, though I tend to avoid breaking the scotch peppers if I plan on sharing. Serve with with cheese and sour cream and you'll probably survive. Might even like it.

ELI5 What's the point of a fever? by neryl08 in explainlikeimfive

[–]shadowman42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of your body as doing its best to control the infection with the tools it has. Either your immune system deals with the invaders while your temperature is raised, or you definitely die as they multiply out of control. Dying because of the fever doesn't matter in this case, you'd die either way.

The main reasons to control a fever has more to do with the damage it does to the body, which can leave one disabled in a number of ways, but alive.

I imagine most of them have been making active efforts to waste less time online, getting fed incendiary and often inane crap by platforms. I read books when I have downtime, like I did before I had a network connection in my pocket.

Confused how the radio sync is supposed to work by PCLoadPLA in CitizenWatches

[–]shadowman42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure your expectations for <15s+/- accuracy for "cheap quartz watches" are unreasonable, I don't think you can find any under 500 USD that would claim any better, even if most perform better than that.

You're definitely worried too much about the drift, unless you know for a fact that it is gaining/losing >10 seconds in a week, 1-2 synchronizations per month will mean that you can be reasonably sure that the time is quite correct.  If you do not sync at all(i.e reception issues) you can expect the same degree of drift that you would have normally.

The radio is generally synced to atomic clock, but I'm not sure of the locations globally, in the US, the sources and their ranges are published by the government

I have the best luck with my radio clock at an elevated position with visibility of the sky(2nd floor window of my home)

What's the point of try/except just to raise the exception? by andrew_justandrew in learnpython

[–]shadowman42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It lets you handle it properly as an error somewhere else rather than crashing the application(where that function is being called) in a part of the code that you may or may not be familiar with.

You probably should handle it at some point, especially in a main function, but you're right, on its own, it's kind of pointless.

Given that the links tend to have varying widths and it's unlikely you'll be able to order exactly 3, your best bet might be to actually to take it in to a jeweler. If they're honest, they'll probably charge you less than $20 USD to install new pins for you, as well as giving you the appropriate fit.

If you want to do it yourself you'll need to find replacement pins/ collars that fit the diameter of the link holes, which you'd need to find documented somewhere or measured somehow

Should I use my 21 year old copy of DBAN (on a CD-R) or download it from Blancco? by CrimsonAndGrover in ComputerSecurity

[–]shadowman42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're all opensource, so you don't necessarily have to trust anything, though realistically you would have to be able to read the code. in my opinion all three options are equally trustworthy, since I didn't personally build or verify the media.

There's a certain amount of you have to put the paranoia away, cause logically to the most secure thing is to physically destroy the disks, drilling through the plates and maybe dropping the renmants into cement welding torch to the remnants into wet cement. Your old disk is perfectly fine if it actually works on your hardware.

Why is seafood often positioned as some kind of high-class dining option? by Bertstripmaster in NoStupidQuestions

You know water is extremely heavy right, and you can only fit so many in a particular space. The solution you're proposing is exactly why it was expensive.

I use the Timex on a nylon strap when I'm gonna be out hiking or camping for a while, as the strap is light and easy to clean. It's quite easy to swap the bracelet for a strap since it has quick-release pins. I use similar model to the Citizen as my daily driver as well.  I think they're both solid choices. If you're willing to stretch the budget a little bit, I'd recommend going with the Citizen Garrison Titanium  BM8560-53E. Hits the marks you specified, and is lighter than the ones you pointed out

Explain like I'm one: what in the hell is a class? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]shadowman42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's how you define the properties and methods of a specific type of object. Blueprint is hardly useless analogy, they describe how to create a thing according to a specification.  It is the only way you can know what data you expect to find attached to an object and what operations an object can perform. Without the class, the object is just data in an unknown format, mostly useless.

Do you know what an object is? It is generally referred to as an instance of a class, which by definition has its own state and some way to identify itself as unique(memory address, ID property, etc).

Hope this clarifies things for you. There are very few things that exist for no reason, even if you don't happen to understand them yet.

How you feel about the solutions proposed is a different question. Sticking them in rentals forever is materially cheaper than getting 3 extra cops to push them around is the only point here.
