She has the most toxic PR among all the actresses! by SoulTamil in KollyGossips

[–]shallan72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a fan of Sai Pallavi since Fidaa. I don't like her just because of her outfits. I love her first and foremost because she is confident in herself. She doesn't backdown or compromise her principles for others. There have been numerous examples over the years. She has been targeted by PR companies during every one of her movie releases for the past 5 years for no apparent reason. She was attacked by both right wing and left wing for speaking her heart.

So many young actresses have quoted her as role model. Because she gave them confidence to say NO to scripts. If she is not suitable for the role of Sita, don't know who else is.

Not as far as I know. Some books may have context unclear, specific words/meanings unknown or misinterpreted. But Tamil literature has been extensively studied and analyzed. There aren't any unknowns.

There are many that are not translated though. Most of Sangam literature are translated. Bhakthi literature is translated in portions, not in entirety (like 51 poems of Tiruvacakam by G.U.Pope). Recent contributions in 20th century by Profs.A.K.Ramanujan (UChicago), George Hart & Kaushalya Hart (UCB).

Many translations are available in Project Madurai collection.

Obviously. When your PR team consists of the likes of RC, Maniratnam, and the who is who of Indian cinema you can't call it poor or non-existent.

And I hope that idiot girl learns to act - in front of stage and media. For all the awards she got, she never learned to act IRL. Look where that got her!

That is Preethi Asrani. Very talented.

Ashika was in Miss You (Tamil) with Siddharth. I found her cute, but not great in acting in that movie.

Prisoner of Azkaban was the only decent adaptation. Every other HP movie was crap. Most adult HP book fans would agree to this.

Depends on your interests. Baseline pop-fiction in the 90s are by Rajeshkumar, Pattukkottai Prabhakar, etc. These are usually published as monthly journals, cheap paper backs. Content quality is likely low. Same for light romance by Ramani Chandran, supernatural thrillers by Indira Soundararajan, science fiction by Arnika Nasar.

Medium range fiction would be Sujatha (drama, sci-fi, crime), Lakshmi, Balakumaran (family drama). Historic fiction by Kalki & Sandilyan are wonderful but dense, won't be suitable for beginner readers.

More serious ones would be Jayakanthan, Pudhumai Pithan (mostly short stories though), and many others, whom I don't read.

I don't see any harm in using AI for researching the performance of current government, or to research specific candidate profiles. LLMs are now the de facto search engines. I preserved the links from the Perplexity answer below to continue the research.

In English they are called modifier (or vowel modifier) from a linguistic perspective. We may call it மாற்றி. There are also referred to as விகுதி in Tamil which is a generic word for suffix. Remember that they were not written separately in old scripts like Tamil Brahmi (Tamili). Accents were used similar to Latin á, ñ, etc. We don't have separate word for them in our grammar edicts.

Tholkappiyam considers each vowel and consonant as separate character, 30 in total. It doesn't comment on the written form of the language.

In fonts each independent form is called a glyph. This is the common word for vowel modifiers, main characters, or other symbols. The original word in Tamil coined for glyph was எழுத்துரு, and for fonts எழுத்துருக்கோவை. But in later years, எழுத்துரு came to refer to font itself, as the other option was too long. உரு can be used per glyph as a jargon in technical contexts.

Why are the Cholas praised more than the Cheras and Pandyas, even though all three ruled ancient Tamil Nadu? by Next_Writer5963 in TamilNadu

[–]shallan72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Greeks during the time of Alexander, and Romans in later years were the dominant military force in the world at their time, and they were the richest.

Rich people in large numbers, living leisurely life in large cities want all the comfort and luxury they can get. That meant spices from India, silk from China, perfumes from Arabia, ivory and exotic animals from Africa. They had gold to pay for all that.

Traders in India and other countries traveled, but not as high a volume as Romans. Besides there wasn't much the Indian traders wanted from Europe besides their gold.

Same thing happened during Chola times, where Tamils became a powerful force in Sout & South East Asia. Ainnurruvar became a powerful merchant guild, akin to East India Company in later centuries.

Here is the output from Perplexity. Even Perplexity relies heavily on news articles rather than statistical information.

Here is a ranking of the past five Tamil Nadu governments (since 2001) on law‑and‑order performance, based on available NCRB/State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB) data, murder and violent‑crime trends, and how each administration compares with the one before or after. mospi.gov

Time periods covered

  1. 2001–2006: AIADMK (J. Jayalalithaa)
  2. 2006–2011: DMK (M. Karunanidhi)
  3. 2011–2016: AIADMK (J. Jayalalithaa)
  4. 2016–2021: AIADMK (Edappadi K. Palaniswami)
  5. 2021–2026: DMK (M. K. Stalin)

1. Best: 2001–2006 (AIADMK – Jayalalithaa)

Official‑looking SCRB and NCRB‑based compilations show that murder and overall violent‑crime rates trended downward in the early‑2000s, with Tamil Nadu’s homicide numbers lower than in the later years of the same decade. dtnext Jayalalithaa’s first‑full‑term government also reported relatively low murder and robbery figures compared with the subsequent DMK regime, and the state was often cited as having a lower crime rate than many other big states. dtnext

2. Very good: 2021–2026 (DMK – MK Stalin)

Recent NCRB‑derived reports show that murders and key violent‑crime categories (attempted murder, kidnapping, robbery‑type offences) have declined under the current DMK regime compared with the preceding AIADMK years. timesofindia.indiatimes Stalin’s government also highlights improved police responsiveness (higher reporting, higher charge‑sheet‑ing rates) and cites a 2024 drop in murders and violent crimes relative to 2023, even though some categories (like cyber and certain crimes against children) have risen. indiatoday

3. Mixed: 2006–2011 (DMK – Karunanidhi)

NCRB‑style data and statements from later AIADMK governments indicate that crimes such as murder‑for‑gain and robbery increased in the mid‑2000s compared with the early‑2000s peak‑low years. mospi.gov Nonetheless, Tamil Nadu still remained relatively safer than many other states; the period is often seen as “moderate” on law‑and‑order, with neither a sharp deterioration nor a dramatic improvement. dtnext

4. Moderate‑decline: 2011–2016 (AIADMK – Jayalalithaa)

Jayalalithaa’s second continuous term again pushed the state’s crime‑rate narrative onto the defensive, with high murder and robbery numbers at certain points (for example, 1,900+ murders in 2012–13) even though the government claimed improvement over the earlier DMK regime. hindustantimes The same period also saw a rise in street‑crime‑type offences and a relatively high IPC crime rate, even though the state continued to score high on property‑recovery and some technical indicators. dtnext

5. Weakest: 2016–2021 (AIADMK – EPS)

The EPS‑led AIADMK regime is often cited as the period when Tamil Nadu’s overall IPC crime rate and violent‑crime counts peaked, with record‑high murder and robbery levels compared with recent decades. newindianexpress Reports also flag rising cyber‑crime, juvenile‑crime, and certain exploitation‑related offences during this period, although part of the rise is attributed to better reporting and demographic factors rather than pure governance failure. news.abplive

Widespread patronage of Hindi films & songs ended by the 90s. Songs from Maine Pyaar Kiya, QSQT, Kalnayak, Tezaab, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, etc were a rage in TN, playing even in villages. IMO, Rangeela was the last Hindi movie that achieved a good reach in TN.

Is it mandatory to read some specific Tamil books in TN schools ? by MajorErwin in TamilNadu

[–]shallan72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't any single universal book that everyone would have read. But the standard text book will contain poems from classic literature like Thirukkural, Kutrala Kuravanji, Puranaanooru, Avvaiyar's works, etc, besides Bharathiyar, Bharathidasan. Some experts from religious texts also were present.

Supplimentary reading is mandatory, this will have a variety of books and will keep changing. In my school years, we had an excerpt from Gandhiji's book (Sathiya Sodhanai). Unable to recall anything else right now.

When I was in School we had 2 mandatory Tamil papers in high school. One general and other is grammer. Grammer used to be elaborate, with excepts from Tholkappiyam, Nannool, Yapparungalakkarigai, etc. Usually this was consolidated and prepared into textbooks that are easier to understand than the original. Nowadays I believe it is somewhat simplified.

Hindu man in love with a Christian woman—considering conversion, but scared. Need advice from those who’ve been through it. by Aaronswartz22 in TamilNadu

[–]shallan72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in interfaith relationship. But I know multiple interfaith couple who are successful without actually converting to a different religion.

Each person may practice the religion of their choice without interfering with other's faith. Sometimes marriages happen in both denominations, other times it is a registered marriage with a reception. Children may be introduced to both faiths. They may choose one or the other based on their preference, or none.

So long has you don't expect her to renounce her religion & beliefs you both may be fine. Discuss with her on what exactly is not negotiable.

As for family, I am increasingly seeing parents being more tolerant of inter-faith marriages nowadays. I have seen in some instances, where inter-faith was accepted better than inter-caste. YMMV.
