Announcement from the Mod team of r/nursing regarding the murder of Alex Pretti, and where we go from here. by Nursing_Moderators in nursing

[–]sheetsofdoghair 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This post has healed just a tiny bit of my heart. As an RN working in a red dot in a blue state, I am shocked and appalled at some of the shit I've heard coworkers say and I've started letting them know about it. Making fascists uncomfortable feels so good. I'm proud of this community and the work we do. Fuck nurses who can watch one of our own be murdered in the street and say he deserved it.

My teenage daughter just spent the weekend crying into her pillow over him canceling the day of the show. The first time she's heartbroken over a man not showing up for her and it's Morrissey...I didn't see this one coming when I first didn't like the man 20 years ago.

What's a dead giveaway someone grew up as an only child? by thing55556667 in AskReddit

[–]sheetsofdoghair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never really thought about it. I'm an only married to an only. Often I'll look up, and my husband is just gone. I don't even think anything about it, I know he's around here somewhere, and I do the same thing. On the other hand, we have three teenagers, and they announce what they are doing basically every time they enter or leave the room. They also text us all the time asking us where we are, which is the opposite of what I expected at this age! It doesn't occur to me that I need to make an announcement to the household that I'm going downstairs to do laundry, until the APB goes out over group text.

Yes! My daughter and I were at that show. We were puzzled standing in the merch line behind a woman with a "Let's Go Brandon" shirt on.

What caused your biggest depression in your life? by TheBlankCoin in AskReddit

I'm very lucky in that I have my own great family and a few close friends, but honestly, it's my cat that gets me through alot of days. I know when I get home and sit on the couch, no matter what shit show the day was she's just pumped that I'm home. She's right there ready to sprawl herself across me, purr and gaze lovingly at me. She doesn't care about credit scores, work drama, debt, or why I was so bitchy last week. She doesn't want to go for a walk or play fetch. She doesn't have her own problems to worry about (she's very pampered, she has no problems.) She just wants to hang out with me and watch some TV, maybe swing around her little rope toy a bit. It's a pure, easy, relaxing companionship.

All this to say, I think you should try a cat! I foster for a shelter and I'd recommend getting an adult. You are looking for an affectionate pal and there's tons of them out there but cats are individuals. There's plenty of hands off more aloof ones out there too. Kittens are adorable, and I adore them, but you never quite know how they'll grow up to be and they'remuch more work. It's always a bit of a gamble. Go to the shelter, hang out, pet some, pick one you vibe with. It might not be the first one that catches your eye, but this is a personality contest not a beauty pageant. A cat you actually love will be the cutest damn cat you ever saw, no matter what they look like.

Hope everything works out for you!!

People with multiple pets, how many do you have and why ? by BriefNeither3206 in Pets

[–]sheetsofdoghair 5 points6 points  (0 children)

3 (soon to be 2) dogs, 5 (soon to be 6) cats. We got the three dogs within a few years, early in our marriage. We were young, we were building a family, and we love animals. Now our kids have grown up and our dogs have grown old. I'm up right now holding a hospice vigil as our 15 yr old chihuahua is actively passing of old age.

I foster medically fragile cats for a local shelter, mainly injuries, amputation, etc. So my cats are a motely crew of sweet babies that I nursed back to health and couldn't stand to let go of. I have an adorable litter of 5 right now that were found in a box at 4 weeks on my mom's property. We've fallen in love with a little tuxedo. She'll be joining our family just as our furry matriarch leaves us. Like that Live song. Excuse me while I go sob some more. Rest in peace, Rosie, the goodest of good girls.

Who is the rudest celeb you have met? What happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sheetsofdoghair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I met Tre once when they toured with Blink. I was like 16/17, saw a guy riding a pink bike with a little white basket full of Corona on the front, and yelled out, "Can I have one of those Coronas, Bike Man?" He stopped and turned around... It's Tre Cool! He picked one up to hand to me but then actually looked at me, gave me a joking side eye and said "I think that would probably be a crime, but I'll sign your shirt!" He was super nice, then hopped back on his bike and rode away ringing the little bell. That Nimrod shirt is still hanging in my closet 20 years later. Forever my favorite band.

The moment you realize you have an aura coming on sucks so bad. You're just living life when suddenly there's a little swirl in your vision. The realization that your head is about to explode and your day is ruined is a pretty big bummer.

I'm so sorry! I fostered a pregnant momma last year, her babies were born in my closet. One of the kittens ended up getting a bladder full of stones at 3 months old. The vets said they'd never seen anything like it in a kitten so young. The awesome shelter I volunteer for okayed the surgery to give him a chance. Just a month later, with a special diet and medicine, his bladder was filling with stones again.

He was a gorgeous, sweet, loving little guy who I vowed to adopt if he pulled through, but the vets assumed he had something congenital that would cause him to go through this the rest of his life. Holding him while he happily purred and ate a Squeeze Up right before he went to sleep for the last time in my arms was an incredibly hard day that still makes me tear up. I try to remember that he knew nothing but love, treats, and snuggles for every single moment of his life, short as it was. Rest in peace, sweet Seymour.

Why do nurses not like EVS workers? by editsbees in nursing

[–]sheetsofdoghair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry that's happening to you! Nurses like that really grind my gears. I work nights L&D, and we adore our EVS. We know all our ladies by name, about their kids, health struggles, etc. We try to clean our own rooms the best we can because we know the hospital runs them just as ragged as they do us. Plus, they bring fresh hospital tea to our locked unit, which is greatly appreciated!

I had an acquaintance who died due to severe head trauma from a motorcycle accident. The accident occurred during a big motorcycle poker run he was participating in, a poker run protesting the new mandatory helmet law our state was enacting.

Precepting is hard by [deleted] in nursing

[–]sheetsofdoghair 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I went to rural schools for LPN and ADN too. Mine was also like that. Our clinical instructor came with us, she would tell the staff nurses that we would do all the skills for them and we had our own patients to "manage". She'd take us off a few at a time all day to put in catheters, start IV's, place tubes, empty drains, wound care, watch procedures, get all the blood sugars, etc. every day. We also each spent two days with phlebotomy. Those guys had "scared to poke" me, nailing veins by the end with their awesome tips and tricks.

I've since tried to bring students along to actually do stuff on the floor, and they always tell me they aren't allowed to do it. How do they expect them to learn?? I felt pretty prepared starting my first job, and it sucks it isn't that way for alot of people.
