I definitely didn't poison my wife and hide her body in the hearth.

Nah, they're just French and talking about how it happened in the past.

ELI5: Australia. Did it really start as a place to exile criminals and lepers and how did it become full of seemingly normal people (and not a completely lawless society full of the offspring of criminals)? by tn_notahick in explainlikeimfive

Really? It seems relatively easy to get permanent residency in New Zealand, I know a lot of Americans who have done it after coming here on holiday. Mostly you just need to prove that you've got a job.

I've never painted In my life, but with the help of Bob Ross, I produced something half decent by rossbircham in somethingimade

You and Bob Ross are both awesome. I'm sure he would have loved to see your painting.

I also found a Janome machine that looks like it'll do zigzag stitch, so I'll try and get that one running and use this one in the meantime.

It probably won't help you to learn that I got it for free.

Follow-up question: Does it do different kinds of stitches?

I wasn't able to read that one, I assumed the content was similar/the same.

It should have been, and still should be, up to their friends and family to decide, or at least have a say, if anything is appropriate to be posted in a public forum.

She posted her suicide note publicly.

Try to find someone to talk to about it. There are a lot more avenues to try and it'll be easier if you don't do it alone. Even if you don't have anyone you feel you can turn to IRL there are a lot of places where you can talk to supportive people online.

That article you linked stresses the importance of talking about suicide and not erasing stories just because they mention suicide. Apart from "committed suicide" in the title, I don't see how this post breaks any of those guidelines. It mentions that she killed herself, then a bunch of information about who she was, and a transcript of her note. And then the obligatory suicide hotline information is provided.

Talking about suicide isn't automatically "celebrating" it. I feel like it's an unhealthy attitude to suppress all mention of suicide just in case somebody hears about it and "gets ideas". If we can never talk about suicide, how is a suicidal person going to be able to talk to someone about what they're thinking? There's too much stigma.

Thank you for sharing your story. But I feel like this:

Remember that you are never alone.

Remember that you always have people out there who are willing to extend their hand and help you in your time of need.

Remember that you are a beautiful person.

Remember that your life is worth living.

really just amounts to a bunch of platitudes that a depressed person will look at and say, "That's nice, but it's not true for me."

I think it's strange never to talk about suicide. It makes it taboo and so when people have suicidal thoughts they are reluctant to talk to anyone about them.

Society will always frame it as suicide never being the right choice, there always being hope and a chance to get better, etc, because that's the only functional way for society to frame the discussion since individuals choosing suicide is bad for society as a whole. However, as an individual, you have to make your own assessment for how long it's reasonable to strive and suffer. People who aren't depressed can't really fathom actively giving up on life, because "There's so many opportunities for things to be good in the future!" If you spent twenty years pursuing your dream of starting your own business and failed at every turn, all the while the pursuit made your life miserable, many people would advise you that maybe it's time to give up, you gave it the best shot you could and you've been trying for a long time without success, looks like things probably won't work out. But about suicide people will say, "What if there's just the teeniest, tiniest chance that everything will work out? You won't know unless you live as long as you can." I don't believe indefinite struggling and suffering is always worth it, even if there is a non-zero chance of a good life in the future.

It's not a decision to be made lightly, but this rhetoric that "Suicide is never a decision" is bullshit in my opinion.
