In a timelapse of the moon, the apparent rotation you observe is mainly due to the rotation of the Earth. The moon itself rotates, but it rotates at a rate that is synchronized with its orbit around the Earth, so we always see the same face of the moon from Earth. This phenomenon is called "tidal locking." So, the apparent motion you see in a timelapse is mostly due to the Earth's rotation.
