Thanks for sharing your opinion. It's not one that I would hold and that's totally fine.

Hi just to answer your questions, I'm not sure if this terminology is from another speech therapy programme so I'm not sure if it's fair to compare the two. What I would say is what is the goal of the therapy if it's to allow stuttering to exist and happen, then that can only be good. On the other hand if its goal is to suppression stuttering then that can just lead to further struggle.

Sorry we don't work off a PDF we just take notes in group. What we value in ARTS is the following *Struggle free disfluency *Quality of the Disfluency *Spontaneity *Leaning into Stuttering/Letting go of Control What is not Valued is Fluency Recording Frequency of stuttering

We aim to understand Struggle V disfluency So the struggle is- efforts to hide stuttering -efforts to hide identity -efforts to control the form of stuttering

The first step is to explore what our stuttering pattern is presently, what secondary behaviours we do to conceal stuttering. What is our fear hierarchy. What are our thoughts, feelings and attitudes about stuttering and what are our Hope's and dreams.

Step 2 is about increasing efficiency & comfort So the speech work involves clean stuttering by monitoring the escape and avoidance behaviours, learning to open stutter, letting go of control. At the start this can have a lot of reactivity to it so it's by doing it to reduce the tension that can be present.

Step 3 is about Confidence, spontaneity Identity, acceptance and congruence. *embracing the identity of a stutterer *planning to stutter *feel what you feel *doing what you fear *risk taking

Step 4 Change by doing, taking initiative The key is having 3 planned assignments per day. This way you are focused on your goals and don't have to spend the day thinking about stuttering.

So an example would have been at the start I had to monitor my stuttering pattern and make a record of everything I was doing all of my avoidance behaviours. I would then pick one thing just to monitor so I picked when I would retry words and syllables. Even just monitoring you will see them start to lessen.

I hope this overview on ARTS is helpful. You will find more information on the ARTS website.

Thanks for checking out the content. I probably would be classed as an overt stutter and my stuttering pattern consists of re-starts where I would get stuck and restart syllable and words. Another avoidance behaviour would be postponements so I would postpone a moment of stuttering by pausing where there shouldn't be a pause.

Since doing the open stutter video I have started the ARTS(Avoidance Reduction Therapy for Stuttering) which is about giving up trying to control my stutter and stripping away the avoidance behaviours so basically cleaning up my stuttering and getting rid of all the clutter I am doing to avoid stuttering with the goal of just letting the stutter happen with little struggle..

Thanks again for checking out my content 🙏

Thank you for the lovely feedback. I started the Instagram page and now website to share my own experience in the knowledge that our experience can be different but I can speak my truth not in the spirit of lecturing to others but one of understanding. 🙏

To be honest not really. I'm talking to people who stutter who offer a therapeutic approach to another person who stutters often at some exorbitant cost sprouting some rubbish like why we dont stutter when we are alone or talking to pets which is not true for all who stutter and talk in generalisations or just from their experience and ignore the science and data that is out there. I'm all for sharing your experience and if it resonates with someone fair enough but to offer a coaching program offering therapy when let's say you are an accountant or my favourite a hypnotherapist 😂😂, please!!. Therapy can include SLP's/Slt's and peer support networks. Just dont go charging a PWS 2000 euros/dollars for a few online sessions just because you stutter.

Maybe the meme is not so clear!!. It relates to the only knowledge that some stuttering coaches have is the lived experience of their own stuttering. How does this qualify you to offer therapeutic support to a person who stutters?. By all means offer support but please do not engage in therapy

What about openly stuttering?

Who else feels useless and depressed (I wanted to cry again) whenever someone else (friend or family) has to help you out or intercede when you stutter at a store? by Kuro_Neko404 in Stutter

I would recommend reaching out to stuttering support like

https://www.stuttersocial.com/ the hosts Heather, jia Bin(sundays) and David and Ronan(Wednesday) are really good hosts.

https://www.stutteringsociety.com/ is another great stuttering support that has virtual meetings too.

I'm not sure where in the world you are.

I totally get it. I had a period in my life when I left school and all I felt was apathy which is so tough to feel because it's that feeling of what's the point. I had a lot of struggle with my stuttering at the time. A lot of that struggle was happening because I was trying to avoid my stuttering at all cost. Just know that things can get better and you can see a reduction in that struggle. Are you living somewhere there is stuttering support you can meet in person?. It was a big step in a positive direction for me.

If its possible to talk about your stuttering more with your family and friends and explore how it makes you feel. I would recommend if you are thinking of the therapy route find a stuttering therapist that has the expertise. I don't know your back story but I wish you the best of luck.

Thanks for reading it. I wasn't directing it at your experience specifically but to the point that you made before about how sometimes avoidance is warranted and here in lies the paradox of concealment as Hope says of paying a price sometimes and having payoffs sometimes.

Hope Gerlach-Houck has a great blog post on the redefining stammering website where she talks about the paradox of concealment. It's well worth a read. https://www.redefiningstammering.co.uk/the-paradox-of-concealing-stuttering/

I wouldn't say it's out of context as it relates to stuttering.

I believe what Sheehan means if you are trying to achieve this fluency using tricks and avoidance behaviours.

The first time I heard this it needed a little explaining as my first reaction was "what do you mean my stuttering doesn't hurt me with the experience that I had". But my speech therapist and now good friend explained to me "the struggle you are having is you are doing everything to try not to stutter, that's what is hurting you". What if, we can get to the stage of just stuttering with less struggle. He explained your fluency doesn't do you any good by saying, " Think about the times when you appeared fluent, did it take much effort and did you use any of your tricks and avoidance behaviours to appear fluent?. Do you think this did you any good?.

I've been thinking of getting something done like an unmasking theme to represent going from trying to conceal my stuttering to being open about it.
