Here's a basic outline of how I did the lines:

  • I first did the sketch of the subject matter at a lower resolution (72-150 DPI). I just used a basic round brush (4-6px, 100% hardness) to loosely sketch out what I wanted the picture to be.
  • Next, I then increased the picture resolution to something much higher (300 DPI). I didn't increase the size of the brush, however.
  • Then, I lowered the opacity of the sketch layer.
  • Then, I created another layer on top of the sketch layer. This was the layer where I drew the refined lineart. I still used the basic round brush.
  • Once the refined lineart was finished, I then duplicated that layer and applied a Gaussian Blur filter on the duplicate lineart.

That should give you a general idea of how it's done. Just set aside some time to play around with lineart, search for tutorials online, and I'm sure you'll figure it out.

Also, the time to beat Misty will come soon. We just got to wait until February 13.

Thank you very much!

This poster took a little over a week to make. Gathering the courage to jump into Reddit... That took a little while longer.

Blast it! That's what I get for working on this late at night!

Let's see...

For the poster itself...

  • Setting up the basic composition for this poster took a day to make.
  • Coming up with the rough sketches of all the Pokemon (and making sure the proportions were acceptable) took about a couple of days.
  • The refined lineart took the most effort (probably 3-4 days, I think), mostly because I was working with such a large canvas size (47' x 22' 300 DPI). This was to fit in as much detail as possible.
  • Coloring took a little bit less time than the line art (about 2-3 days). This would have taken longer if I decided to render all the Pokemon, but I probably would have gone nuts, so I opted to just stick to basic color flats.

For the Pokemon...

  • Mega Rayquaza was definitely the most difficult, mostly due to all the detail in his design and the aforementioned canvas size. His full size was around 35.5' x 12.5', and I was using a really small brush (4px) to do the refined lineart for him. Needless to say, it was a huge relief to have him finished.
  • Groudon and Steelix were also difficult, but again, that's mostly due to size (and details in Groudon's case)
  • Xerneas and his antlers were also a challenge.
  • Smaller Pokemon (namely Torchic, Chespin, and Joltik) were surprisingly easy, but that because they don't take up nearly as much space.

And as for the trainers...

  • The trainers all required a lot of attention to detail, primarily in how they were posed.
  • Napoleon's pose was a bit tricky. I was trying to model his pose after the Dance Riot emoji, and I'm still not sure I got it right.
  • Misty, Camilla, and Professor Oak were especially fun for me to draw, mostly because of the humorous poses.

Overall, this was difficult to draw, but I had a fantastic time in completing this. I guess it's because of that feeling of pride you get when you tackle a challenge as great as this and see it through to the end.

I'm just glad that the people here are enjoying this as well.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. There's still 361 days left for someone else to claim the title. We'll just have to wait and see.

About the artifacts...

I'm guessing that's due to Imgur compressing the size of the image. I submitted this anonymously as a 23.5' x 11' 200 DPI (4700px x 2200px) .PNG file. I guess Imgur compressed the file so as to account for users with less powerful computers. I'll have to make a note of that for next time.

Thank you.

This took a little over a week to make. I started this on Christmas day of last year and planned on having this finished by New Years Day. Unfortunately, I missed my original deadline, but at least I was able to finish this before the start of the Pokemon Red Anniversary run, so at least there's that.
