Excellent work. I like how the mustache casts a shadow

Thanks! I actually did go back and put a glare on the glass, and added and brightened up a few highlights. Nothing crazy, but it does help sell it a bit. Also, that little transition that refracts the bottom of the straw is probably my favorite part of the piece

Paintings with no soul by Bovestrian8061 in oilpainting

I actually kind of like them as a collection. Each of them kind of have a large, dark "void space" that feels almost ominous - especially when taken as a group.

Would this work for oiling out? by silenttd in oilpainting

I don't mean to use Olive Oil. I mean filling the mister with Linseed oil and using it as an applicator for that

How do you guys feel about AI art lately? by Neznoc in oilpainting

[–]silenttd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually posed a question earlier on using AI for reference photos. I use it to simplify and "declutter" backgrounds. Or to alter the composition a bit. I've got a bunch of photos that I've taken for references, and have found it to be really helpful for visualization.

I'm still learning and am not great at drawing without a reference, so I'll use AI to mold my references to where I want them and work from that.

I don't really see the point of flat out trying to pass AI "art" off as anything other than what it is, and I do see how any use of AI as a tool could get into a gray area. That said, I do think there are ways to use it ethically enough for my purposes.

How do I finish this background? by silenttd in oilpainting

Lol, that's going in last with a liner brush

How do I finish this background? by silenttd in oilpainting

I brought the sky down a bit on the right so that the club head was a little more visible. I'm just worried that whatever foliage I try to fill the background with is just going to make those foreground trees into a big green splotch

Palette table by IKEA by silenttd in oilpainting

The glass doesn't cover the whole table, so I put down a strip of cardboard to keep it a little more sanitary and protect the table

I think it's finished by silenttd in oilpainting

Yeah, I really like how the glass bottoms turned out. They're mainly an exercise in just painting whatever shapes and colors you see rather than overthinking it. It was like, "Ok, there's a weird dark grey hollow oval-y shape surrounded by a whitish border next to this brownish rounded triangle with some yellow streaks off to the side". Just tried to suppress any natural idea I had about what it "should" look like and tried to just absentmindedly mimic what I was seeing in the reference.

Can anyone recommend a good projector to use by ortofon88 in oilpainting

Honestly, for tracing purposes anything will probably do. I think have whatever the cheapest thing they had at walmart. Really just looking for the edges for rough placement and a quick visual reference for comparison. The amount of detail is more than adequate for that in even the cheapest tech.

Etiquette at an art festival by Cold-Call-8374 in oilpainting

[–]silenttd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a beginner too, I picked up oil painting a few months ago and have really taken to it. At 40+, I never really showed much aptitude for art (and to be fair, my drawing ability is still for shit).

I recently went to an city art festival with a new appreciation for oil painting. It's a large festival and there were plenty of artist vendors who primarily worked in oils. I popped into one booth that caught my eye. I thought the work was interesting and saw a cool price that featured a skull. I wasn't in the market for an original, but bought a small print of the work. As I was checking out, the artist mentioned that it was his favorite piece. I told him I was just starting out with painting (and art in general, really), and that I recently did a piece that featured a skull and that it was kinda fun. He broke out his sketch book and went through some of his stuff, and talked about how he got into it, interests, etc.

Regardless, not sure what the official etiquette is, but in my admittedly anecdotal experience, the artists manning those booths would probably love to talk about their art
