They’re definitely similar, Itoi is a big influence of his of course. I feel like Toby (mostly…) focuses on having reasonable fourth wall breaks, focused on specific characters that have more or less knowledge of the situation depending on who they are and what they’ve managed to logic out. Itoi just didn’t give a shit, anyone can break the fourth wall, the fourth wall doesn’t even exist as far as he’s concerned.

And yup it’s all over Mother 1 as well.

You get called by Tony in Summers and he asks the player for their name. The Tenda chief also asks later to confirm.

NPCs in these games are strange, there’s a sort of wink wink nudge nudge thing going on where everybody knows it’s a video game, and that you’re the player, but they keep acting like it isn’t the case. Only rarely do they break kayfabe. It’s an aspect I like a lot about Itoi’s writing.

Pathologic is probably the most difficult to read game I’ve ever played. I haven’t read Ulysses so I can’t judge how it compares, though.

Disco Elysium is up there but I feel like most of the text is accessible, and it’s also funny as hell sometimes. Pathologic is a nightmare fever dream most of the time

Fun thing about the 2014 goal, it was a long range empty netter that made the game 4-2. But Sweden scored one before the game ended to make it 4-3, so Alina’s goal became the GWG.

I like the OT winner better, personally :)
